Plank Firm Luxe mattress review 2026: Can an ultra-firm mattress with a twist actually be comfortable?

Brooklyn Bedding's Plank Firm Luxe is a flippable mattress that promises serious support without sacrificing comfort. Tested and reviewed for two weeks, we tried both firmness levels to see if it's worth the price.

Firm or extra firm? This two-sided mattress lets you decide.

If you've ever dismissed firm mattresses as too unforgiving, the Plank Firm Luxe from Brooklyn Bedding might make you reconsider. It's billed as one of the firmest hybrid mattresses on the market — but with a twist: it's flippable, with a "firm" side and an "extra firm" side, so you're not locked into a single feel.

That flexibility matters. When a mattress stops supporting the body properly, "your muscles may be working all night to keep you stable instead of relaxing," says Dr. Christopher Gay , a pain management physician and president of Alaska Center for Pain Relief in Anchorage — and that fatigue shows up as the stiffness and soreness many people chalk up to aging. The stakes are higher than people realize: a mattress that doesn't meet your needs can contribute to frequent awakenings and restless sleep, while the right one promotes deeper, more restorative rest, says Dr. Andrew Namen , a pulmonologist and sleep medicine physician at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

The Plank Firm Luxe is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association , and the company-cited research shows improvements in spinal stress, lumbar support and back pain over a three-month period — but whether it earns a spot among the best firm mattresses available comes down to one thing: how it actually sleeps.

That's where Kristin Granero comes in.

A dedicated back sleeper and Yahoo Senior Home Writer who has tested more bedding than she can count, Granero knew exactly what she was looking for in a mattress: firm support without the punishment. She rotated between both sides over two weeks and enlisted her sister to help evaluate motion isolation along the way. Here's what she found.

Delivery and setup

Our tester received her Plank Firm Luxe "very quickly," meaning the mattress landed on her doorstep within 3-5 business days. Shipping is free for the lower 48 states, but white-glove delivery — where your old mattress is removed and your new one set up — isn't an option here, so know that setup is on you, which is worth planning for.

At 100 pounds for a queen-size mattress , the box isn't a one-person job. "I was able to get it up the stairs with the help of another person," Granero says — so have someone on standby. Once you're in, though, it's straightforward: "The mattress was easy to unwrap and started to decompress almost immediately."

After opening it, Granero noticed "a slight chemical scent," which faded after she let it "breathe" for two to three hours. (Brooklyn Bedding suggests letting the mattress air out for three to five hours before putting on a mattress protector or sheets.) While you can sleep on it the first night, it may take up to 72 hours to fully expand and for any wrinkles to smooth out.

Durability, materials, perceived firmness and shape retention

To evaluate the Plank Firm Luxe, we followed our standard mattress testing process , which looks at durability, materials, firmness, comfort and how well a mattress holds its shape over time.

Durability

While a few months of testing can't predict years of wear, how a mattress is constructed — and how it holds up during setup and daily use — still matters. According to Granero, there were no signs of poor craftsmanship, from loose threads to uneven seams.

We didn't find model-specific long-term durability data for the Plank Firm Luxe on Consumer Reports, but the independent testing lab awarded the closely related Plank Luxe a 5 out of 5 for durability after eight years of simulated use — suggesting strong resistance to sagging over time.

That confidence in years-long performance is reflected in Brooklyn Bedding's limited lifetime warranty, which extends coverage beyond year 10 (full replacement in years 1–10, then partial replacement coverage, with you paying a percentage of the cost) — longer than many competitors offer.

Materials

This Brooklyn Bedding mattress is a hybrid that combines memory foam and traditional coils. While there's no shortage of hybrid options on the market, the Firm Luxe stands out for its flippable design — one side is firm, the other extra-firm — letting you choose the firmness level that best suits your comfort and sleep style.

The mattress features a minimal-loft quilted top, three foam layers and an encased coil system designed for support. Notable materials and construction details include:

  • CertiPUR-US certified :The polyurethane foam layers are independently tested to meet standards for material content, emissions and durability, including limits on certain potentially harmful chemicals.

  • GREENGUARD Gold certified :The mattress has been third-party tested for thousands of chemicals and meets strict limits for emissions that can affect indoor air quality.

  • No chemical fire retardants or fiberglass:Instead, the mattress uses a fabric blend of non-woven silica, rayon, polyester and cotton in what's commonly called a fire-retardant sock.

  • Individually encased, zoned steel coils: The Plank Firm Luxe features a 6-inch system of pocketed coils , which are known for their closer contouring and ability to minimize motion transfer. There are 961 in a queen-size, well above the roughly 400 coils often cited as a baseline for a queen mattress. (Brooklyn Bedding doesn't list the coil gauge on its website, and customer service said it wasn't able to provide that information.)

The Plank Firm Luxe offers an optional "GlacioTex" cooling cover designed to reduce heat buildup. As we've noted in other reviews , passive cooling features — such as gel-infused foams and cooling fabrics — may help limit heat retention, but they don't actively regulate temperature. While we didn't test the GlacioTex cover, Granero said the mattress — though not noticeably cooling — did a good job of keeping her comfortable throughout the night.

Of note: While the brand highlights its Arizona factory, its FAQ page states that the mattress is, in fact, made with both domestic and imported components.

Perceived firmness

The Plank Firm Luxe is a flippable mattress, with one side rated firm — about a 7.5 to 8 out of 10 on the firmness scale — and the other extra-firm — around a 9.5 to 10. Granero said those ratings feel accurate. While she described the mattress as very firm — especially noticeable when sleeping on her side — she added that "the top layer is still cushy, so it doesn't feel uncomfortable."

That sturdy feel translated into strong performance scores. The mattress excelled in edge support, making it easy to sit on the side to put on slippers or stand up. That said, when lying directly on the edge, it didn't feel quite as stable as a slightly plusher mattress might.

It also earned perfect marks on the rollover test. "Given it's so firm, it's very easy to roll over," Granero said. Motion isolation was equally strong. Granero recruited her sister to help test it, and neither felt a thing when the other shifted positions.

Shape retention

At the two-week mark, Granero reported "no visible change in shape" — another encouraging, albeit still early, sign that the mattress may hold up well over time.

Comfort level: The initial experience

As part of Yahoo's mattress testing process , we gather quick first impressions for features like edge support and firmness across different sleep positions.

Granero's off-the-bat impressions were overwhelmingly positive. After the first night, she was a fan, saying, "I did not have any pain or soreness upon waking up in the morning!" The mattress also performed well across sleep positions , though she found it most comfortable for back sleeping and least comfortable for side sleeping — especially on the extra-firm side.

Comfort level: What ongoing testing revealed

Yahoo testers evaluate mattresses for at least two weeks at home, then share their feedback. That window matters: Sleep researchers note it can take several days — sometimes longer — for your body to adjust to a new mattress.

After two weeks of sleeping on the Plank Firm Luxe, Granero didn't want to switch back to her old bed. "The mattress is supportive and firm, but not uncomfortable," she noted, adding that it was particularly comfortable for back sleeping, but might feel too firm for habitual side sleepers. Most importantly, she woke up completely free of soreness and discomfort.

Granero also appreciated the mattress's versatility. "I like how you can flip it to achieve different firmness levels," she said, noting that this adds to the bed's overall value. She's also the first to admit it's an investment . But if you're specifically in the market for a firm hybrid, she believes the sturdy construction and long-term warranty make the price feel more worthwhile.

What about customer service?

As part of our testing process, we ask testers to contact customer service with questions about the return policy. In this case, the brand's chatbot delivered. "The brand has a chatbot on its site, and it responded within seconds with the information," Granero says.

The Plank Firm Luxe comes with a 120-night trial, though you'll need to keep it for at least 30 nights before initiating a return. If you decide it's not the right fit within that window, a $99 return fee applies. To get the process started, email the company with "Return Request" in the subject line, and customer service will coordinate pickup and disposal.

We confirmed these details align with the return policy posted on the brand's website.

For shoppers who prefer a human touch, live chat agents are typically available daily (9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET on weekdays and slightly reduced weekend hours), with limited phone support during designated hours, according to the brand's contact page.

The Plank Firm Luxe is best suited to sleepers who genuinely prefer a very firm mattress. Back and stomach sleepers will likely feel most at home here, and the flippable design means you can fine-tune between firm and extra-firm without committing to either. Couples will appreciate how little they feel each other moving in the night.

This mattress is:

  • A good back sleeper mattress

  • A good stomach sleeper mattress

  • A good mattress for couples

  • A good mattress for pain relief

Side sleepers, though, should pause. Without enough give at the shoulders and hips, a very firm surface can create pressure points that quietly rob you of sleep — you might not even realize the mattress is the culprit until you wake up stiff for the fifth morning in a row. "The most important indicator is how you feel when you wake up," says Namen. If your answer involves shoulder or hip soreness, this probably isn't your mattress — and that's okay.

FAQs

What is the difference between the Plank Firm and Plank Firm Luxe?

Both are firm and flippable, but the Plank Firm is all-foam , whereas the Luxe is a hybrid mattress — foam paired with an innerspring coil system. Those coils add responsiveness and airflow that you just don't get with all-foam, making it easier to move around at night and keeping things cooler. The one catch: the coil layer means the Luxe actually lands slightly softer than the all-foam Plank Firm, so if you're after the absolute firmest feel the Plank Firm might just be your mattress.

What are the downsides of a firm mattress?

Without enough cushioning, a firm mattress can create pressure buildup at the shoulders, hips and lower back — which can mean inflammation and interrupted sleep, says Gay. Side sleepers and lighter-weight people tend to feel this most. A firm mattress can also take longer to break in, so give it at least two to three weeks before making a final call. Bottom line: there's no one-firmness-fits-all answer — the real test is how you feel when you wake up.

Is the Plank Firm Luxe the firmest mattress?

Not quite. While the Plank Firm Luxe is extremely firm — especially on its extra-firm side (around a 9.5 to 10 out of 10) — Brooklyn Bedding's all-foam Plank Firm is designed to feel even more firm overall. The difference comes down to construction. The Luxe uses coils beneath its foam layers, which add lift and responsiveness. That means you'll feel very supported, but not completely rigid. The all-foam Plank Firm, by contrast, has a denser, more solid surface feel with virtually no bounce.

For most shoppers looking for an ultra-firm hybrid mattress, the Plank Firm Luxe will likely feel more than firm enough. But if your goal is the most rock-solid, board-like feel possible, the all-foam Plank Firm may be the better match.

Is the Plank Firm Luxe mattress good for back pain?

It might be. The mattress is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association, and a company-sponsored study found it reduced back pain over three months. However, a 2021 independent review concluded that medium-firm mattresses tend to offer the most relief for lower back pain.

In other words, firmer isn't always better. As Gay notes, a mattress "won't fix a herniated disc or arthritis, but it could make the difference between managing your pain and struggling with it every morning."

Experts also recommend sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees to help relax back muscles and maintain the natural curve of your spine. A small rolled towel under the waist can provide additional support.
