One of the most humble fruits in the fruit kingdom, bananas are easily available year round everywhere. There are no banana farms around New York, yet you would still find the yellow fruit, fresh and sweet, on all fruit stalls. The banana ripening facilities are the secret behind this. Imagine a modern, sci-fi inspired gassing facility made to trick objects into staying young and new. That is exactly what is done here. A temperature controlled room at 64 degrees Celsius, ripens bananas to the desired amount over the time of 5 days. Whether the wholesale buyer wants it green, yellow or mixture of both, the bananas will be exactly matching the requirements. You can get a tour of the warehouse by getting in touch with them as the facility doesn't give public tours.

Arthur Avenue is named after president Chester A. Arthur and since the late 1950's it has been considered as the city's real Little Italy as opposed to the gentrified and tourist-laden neighborhood in Lower Manhattan. All along the street visitors will find Italian grocers, restaurants, seafood vendors and inside the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, they'll find just about everything. It's one of NYC's best-kept secrets and when you do discover it, you will see why it is so different than the one in Manhattan, it is that authentic.

High Bridge

The 130.1 acres 52.6 hectares of the Highbridge Park lay stretched along the banks of the Harlem River, in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. Once a very popular park, it was gradually neglected by the authorities, and became ridden with crime and garbage. Since 2000, however, a major redevelopment and revival project has been underway to restore the Highbridge Park to its glory, the fruits of which are evident in the park again being a popular haunt among the locals. For mountain biking lovers, this park would especially be a must visit, as since 2007, it has the city’s first approved mountain bike trails and dirt jumps. See the website to know more.
