Feeling anxious about your upcoming move? Choosing the right moving company can make all the difference. But finding the right mover can be challenging. That’s why we researched and ranked the best local moving companies in the Roanoke area based on key factors, including customer feedback, proper licensing and insurance, Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation and more. We also called our top picks to learn about their pricing, deposit requirements and employee background check policies. Here’s what we found.

Top Roanoke movers

The best moving company in Roanoke for YOU

Every home is different, which means each move comes with its own unique set of challenges. Because of that, the right mover for you may not be the same one that works best for someone else. Your focus should be on finding a mover that meets your individual needs and budget. For example, if you know you’ll need storage, contact movers that offer the specific storage solutions you’re looking for. If you have bulky or heavy items, consider hiring a mover with experience in handling oversize loads. Be sure to gather and compare at least three estimates from different companies before making your final decision.

Virginia Varsity Transfer is our pick for the best overall mover in Roanoke. The company charges $195 per hour for a crew of three movers and $225 per hour for a crew of four movers. Labor is billed in 15-minute increments. Travel, truck and equipment fees are included in the hourly rate. However, they do charge extra to move any heavy or specialty items. You'll also need to pay 50% of your total move cost upfront in order to schedule your move.

American Moving & Storage is another great option for a local mover in Roanoke. They quoted us $205 per hour for a four-person crew, or $245 for a crew of five movers. Travel and fuel costs are dependent on the number of trucks and equipment needed for your move. In our case, we were told our travel fee would likely cost between $200 and $250. The company also has an hour minimum for moving jobs, but just like the travel fees, this also varies from job to job. Our move would require a minimum of five hours, which is quite high. On the bright side, there's no deposit or down payment required to book your move.

Founded in 1988 and located in Salem, Va., Varsity Transfer aims to be the "good guys" of the moving industry, which they define as being "clean-cut, professional, and honest." You can hire the company for moving services, packing and unpacking, storage, commercial moves, labor-only jobs and more. We called the business to ask for a local moving quote to see how much it would cost to move a three-bedroom, 1,300-square-foot house within Roanoke.

When we called, we were connected with Misty, a sales representative from the company, who was friendly and able to answer all our questions quickly. The company strongly prefers to set up a time to perform an on-site survey of your home so it can take an inventory of your belongings and see if there's anything in your home that could prove challenging to work around. However, if you're just looking for some ballpark figures, they'll provide some numbers over the phone.

A crew of three movers was recommended for our move, which costs $195 per hour. Or we could hire a four-person crew for $225 per hour. Travel and fuel costs are included in the hourly rate (for local moves only), so you won't be surprised with secret truck and fuel charges. The movers will also transport any heavy or specialty items you have, as well as carefully pack and box up delicate items like TVs and mirrors. However, these do cost extra.

Services offered

  • Local and long-distance moving

  • Packing and unpacking services

  • Storage services

  • Commercial moves

  • Heavy and specialty item moving

  • Labor-only services

The company has a set four-hour minimum for moving jobs, so you can expect to spend at least $585 for a three-person team or $900 for a four-person team. You'll also be required to pay 50% of the total move cost upfront to schedule your move. Your deposit is fully refundable as long as you cancel at least three days before your move date.

All payments can be made with cash, card or check. Just note that there's a 3% processing fee for all credit and debit card payments. We were also told that all the movers are background-checked and that the company doesn't outsource any of its labor.

Virginia Varsity Transfer is a BBB-accredited business with an A+ rating and no filed complaints. It has a 4.9-star rating on Google (178 reviews) and a 4.5-star rating on Yelp (25 reviews).

American Moving and Storage is a veteran-owned and operated company that leans into traditional military values like "integrity, work ethic and honor" with every job. The company handles both local and long-distance moving, packing, storage, junk removal and more. We called the business to get an estimate to move our three-bedroom, 1,300-square-foot house locally within Roanoke.

During our call, we spoke with Chad, an estimator with the company, who was polite and ready to answer our questions. We were told that we'd either need a four-person or five-person crew for our move. Four movers cost $205 per hour, and a team of five movers costs $245 per hour.

To obtain an accurate estimate, you'll need to schedule an appointment for an estimator to conduct an on-site survey of your home. There are also travel and fuel costs, but the amount you'll pay depends on the number of trucks and equipment needed for your move. For our move, the cost would range between $200 and $250.

Services offered

  • Local and long-distance moving

  • Packing services

  • Storage services

  • Junk removal

  • Home staging

  • Labor-only services

The company charges a minimum of one hour for labor. However, much like travel costs, the hour minimum varies from job to job. Our move would require a minimum of five hours, which is quite high compared to other movers we've spoken with. This means we would spend at least between $1,225 and $1,475 for our move. There's no deposit or down payment required to book your move, and all payments are due upon completion of the move. You can pay with cash, card or check.

If you do pay with a check, they strongly prefer a certified check. It's also worth noting that there's a 3% processing fee on all credit and debit card transactions. When we asked if the movers were background-checked, we were given a mixed response. The company runs background checks on its truck drivers, but it isn't required for the rest of the moving crew.

American Moving and Storage is a BBB-accredited business with an A+ rating and two filed complaints. It has a 4.6-star rating on Google (155 reviews) and a 3.2-star rating on Yelp (23 reviews).

BLVD Moving is the best national moving company

A BLVD Moving truck parked on the street in front of a house
A BLVD Moving truck parked on the street in front of a house (BLVD Moving)

At Yahoo Local, we’re dedicated to showcasing exceptional local businesses, though we also understand that national moving companies can sometimes be the smarter choice, especially for long-distance relocations. After reviewing several national providers, we named BLVD Moving as our top choice among the best national moving companies . For more details on how to decide between local and national movers, check out our in-depth comparison guide .

BLVD Moving is run by a team of industry veterans with decades of experience. While the company currently operates just four offices in California, it provides both local and long-distance moving services throughout the U.S. Family-owned and independently operated, BLVD manages its own fleet of trucks and staff members. However, its terms specify that subcontractors or agents may occasionally assist during busy periods, which is a common practice in the moving industry that’s worth noting.

We reached out to BLVD for a quote on a 500-mile move involving around 1,340 cubic feet of household belongings, or roughly the equivalent of a three-bedroom home without major appliances. The quoted price was about $6,700, aligning with the rates of comparable cross-country movers. To secure a booking, BLVD requires a 33% deposit, with 50% of the remaining balance due at pickup and the final payment upon delivery.

Services offered

  • Local and long-distance moves

  • Residential, office and commercial moves

  • Packing services

  • Storage

  • Financing

If you need to cancel, deposits are refundable as long as the company is notified at least two business days before pickup. Delivery timeframes range from two to 21 business days, depending on the distance. The countdown begins from your chosen delivery date, meaning longer moves could take just over a month from start to finish.

BLVD advises customers to book at least 30 days in advance, or even earlier during high-demand times such as summer or the beginning and end of each month. (For more details, see our guide on the best and worst times to move .) Requesting a quote is quick and easy: you can schedule a virtual walkthrough or complete an online inventory form for faster results. Financing options are also available, with qualifying customers eligible for interest rates starting at 0%.

BLVD Moving holds accreditation from the BBB with a B rating and has 95 complaints on record, which is a typical number for large-scale national movers. The company maintains a 4.4-star average on Google (based on 1,293 reviews) and a 2.2-star rating on Yelp (378 reviews). All movers are full-time employees who undergo background checks rather than independent contractors.

BLVD’s headquarters is located at 21622 Plummer St., Chatsworth, Calif., 91311. Business hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. To request a quote, call 844-274-0500 or submit an online inquiry .

BLVD Moving is our top pick for a national mover due to its combination of experience, flexibility and relatively strong Google reviews. It has background-checked crews, but it also reserves the right in its terms and conditions to subcontract your move or assign it to agents. The quote process is smooth, in our experience, requiring a simple online inventory, and BLVD's cancellation policy is relatively good.

Pros
  • Has its own movers and fleet
  • Local and long-distance moves
  • Offers virtual estimates
  • Background-checked crews
Cons
  • No GPS tracking
  • Mixed Yelp ratings
  • Can subcontract jobs to other movers
  • Relatively high deposit

Virginia moving FAQs

What info should you have when requesting an estimate?

The information required to obtain a moving estimate varies by company and the level of detail in their pricing structure. Some movers will only request basic information, such as your home’s square footage, the number of bedrooms and the pickup and delivery addresses. Others may wait to provide a quote until they’ve reviewed a complete inventory of the belongings you plan to move .

At the very least, you should be prepared to provide the size of both your current and new homes, the exact addresses and details about any large or specialty items (like pianos, safes or major appliances) that require extra care. Many moving companies apply additional charges for items exceeding certain weight limits, so sharing these details early helps prevent surprise fees. You should also mention if either property has stairs or elevators, as movers often charge extra for those conditions.

What should you know about packing and storage in Virginia?

Virginia experiences all four seasons, with temperatures that remain fairly moderate throughout the year. In Roanoke, for instance, average summer highs reach around 86°F, while winter lows drop to about 29°F, according to U.S. Climate Data .

Items such as electronics, artwork, cosmetics, plastics and medications can be damaged by extreme temperatures. To keep them safe, it’s best to move these belongings in a climate-controlled vehicle. If you plan to store them, investing a little extra in an indoor or temperature-regulated storage unit is a wise choice.

What's different about condo and apartment moving in Virginia?

When relocating to or from an apartment or condominium, you’ll likely have to deal with stairs. Many movers charge extra for carrying items up multiple flights, and some also include fees for using the elevator. In certain cases, costs are calculated based on the total number of steps climbed, though policies vary from one company to another. You may not be billed for a single flight, but if your unit is on the third floor or higher, you can expect to pay an additional fee.

For more, read our guide to a successful apartment move .

Do you need moving permits or licenses to move in Virginia?

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) oversees intrastate moving companies through its Motor Carrier Services division. The state’s licensing rules vary based on the distance of the move. For relocations within 30 miles of the origin point, movers are required to hold a Property Carrier authority. For moves exceeding that distance, companies must obtain a Household Goods Carrier authority.

For additional details, see our comprehensive guide on Virginia’s moving company licensing and regulations .

How much should you tip movers in Virginia?

A general rule of thumb for tipping movers is to give between 10% and 20% of your total moving cost . This standard applies to both local and long-distance moves. That said, tipping is optional. It’s simply a way to express gratitude for good service. If the experience doesn’t meet your expectations, there’s no obligation to provide a tip.
