A historic building with a curious past at the center of Asheville, Pack's Tavern is more than meets the eye. First built in 1907, the Hayes Hopson building served many purposes before its current incarnation as a lively pub, from a lumber center to a lively barbecue and bluegrass joint. Most interesting, however, is the network of underground tunnels connected to the bar that enabled bootleggers to smuggle whiskey undetected. Today, you'll find that the whiskey flows more openly, though the bar retains some prohibition-era charm with deco-style lights, exposed beams and wonderfully worn in banquettes. Make sure to check out some of the tasty burgers on the menu as well as a jam packed music calendar.
