With Pittsburgh Steelers S DeShon Elliott slated to miss several weeks with an MCL sprain, the acquisition of standout safety Jabrill Peppers couldn't have come at a better time — and clearly HC Mike Tomlin feels the same way.
On Tuesday, Tomlin shared what excites him most about Peppers — pointing to his ability to excel in a variety of roles on defense and special teams.
"We have Jabrill Peppers in the building," Tomlin told reporters . "We'll be signing Jabrill today and get him up to speed about what it is we'd ask him to do. Highly familiar with him, not only as his time as a Cleveland Brown, but scouted him heavily when he came out of Michigan. He's a football player first, positional player second.
"He displayed positional flexibility over the course of his career — at either safety position, at rundown, nickel. He's been a capable guy in the special teams space over the course of his career — covering kicks, returning punts. He's just a good, well-rounded football player. Glad to add and have him in the fold."
Tomlin loves his positional flexibility — and Peppers was one of the best safeties in 2024, as well as the seventh-highest graded per Pro Football Focus .
Whether or not Peppers will contribute right away remains to be seen, but fans should expect a healthy dose of special teams impact while he gets acclimated to the Steelers ' defensive scheme.
