The Los Angeles Angels added experienced organizational depth Thursday by signing veteran utility player Pablo Reyes to a minor league contract and assigning him to Triple-A Salt Lake. The 32-year-old was released from his deal with the San Diego Padres just a few days earlier.
Reyes heads to the Salt Lake Bees following a scorching offensive stretch at Triple-A El Paso. In 258 plate appearances, he compiled a .310/.408/.491 slash line while recording a 13.6% walk rate and a 14% strikeout rate. He also led El Paso in on-base percentage and walks with 35, finishing with a 121 wRC+, production that ranked 21% above the Pacific Coast League average despite the hitter-friendly environment. During spring training, he also impressed by batting .323/.417/.419 across 19 Cactus League games.
Despite that production, the Padres never added Reyes to their 40-man roster. He spent the season playing five different defensive positions in addition to designated hitter, but ultimately remained in Triple-A before being released.

Across seven major league seasons, Reyes has appeared in 257 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates , Milwaukee Brewers , Boston Red Sox , New York Mets and New York Yankees . He owns a career .245/.305/.342 batting line with eight home runs and 56 RBIs. While his offensive numbers have been modest at the MLB level, his defensive versatility has remained his biggest asset, with experience across the infield and outfield, including second base, third base and shortstop.
Reyes' best big league campaign came with the Red Sox in 2023. Reyes appeared in a career-high 64 games, batting .287/.339/.377 with a .716 OPS, two home runs, 20 RBIs, seven stolen bases in nine attempts and nine doubles. He also set career highs in hits, doubles, walks, stolen bases, RBIs and home runs that season.
Los Angeles could eventually create an opportunity for Reyes. The team recently designated Donovan Walton to activate Mike Trout , leaving room for another versatile utility option in the organization. The Angels are also expected to be active ahead of the trade deadline, with veterans such as Jorge Soler , Jose Siri , Josh Lowe , Oswald Peraza , Vaughn Grissom and Jo Adell viewed as possible trade candidates.
If roster openings develop because of trades or injuries, Reyes could be in line for another major league opportunity, though he is out of minor league options.
