New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs’ arraignment on criminal charges was delayed several weeks at the request of his lawyers.
Diggs, 32, is charged with a single count of felony strangulation and a misdemeanor count of assault and battery in connection with an incident on Dec. 2, records show. He was first set to be arraigned on the charges on Jan. 23, but a Dedham District Court judge moved the hearing to Feb. 13.
Diggs has been accused by his personal chef of hitting and choking her over a payment dispute. She claims that Diggs “smacked her across the face” and then “tried to choke her using the crook of his elbow around her neck,” according to a police report.
Through his lawyer, David Meier, Diggs has denied the charges.
“They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur,” Meier said in a statement. “The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear: they are the direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute that was not resolved to the employee’s satisfaction. Stefon looks forward to establishing the truth in a court of law.”
He has also said that Diggs and the woman are attempting to reach a financial settlement.
Speaking to reporters days after the charges were filed , Diggs said he could not speak on the accusations.
Diggs and the Patriots are preparing to host the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round of the NFL playoffs on Sunday. The new date means the hearing will be held after the conclusion of the NFL season — Super Bowl LX will be played in Santa Clara, Calif., on Feb. 8.
Diggs’ teammate, defensive tackle Christian Barmore, is scheduled to be arraigned on a misdemeanor assault charge in connection with an unrelated incident on Feb. 3. Barmore is also represented by Meier.
