FOXBOROUGH – Jared Wilson saw the stories, but still, the Patriots ’ rookie was shocked.
There’s an annual tradition in the NFL where starting quarterbacks buy lavish Christmas gifts for their offensive linemen.
In the past, Tom Brady had gifted his offensive linemen all sorts of gifts, ranging from UGG Boots, iPads, watches, and Canada Goose Jackets. In 2007, Brady gifted his offensive linemen Audi Q7s on a 1-year lease.
This Holiday season, Patriots offensive linemen voiced their approval of Drake Maye’s Christmas gifts, but many said they wanted to keep it a secret. That changed on Thursday night. In a pizza review with Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, the quarterback’s wife, Ann Michael Maye, revealed that her husband bought his offensive linemen saunas.
The quarterback’s Christmas idea was a hit this year. Wilson said his jaw dropped when Maye revealed the gift to his offensive linemen.
“I honestly didn’t take into account what he was going to get us. You see on social media, everyone else’s quarterbacks get gifts, but I never really thought about it,” Wilson said. “Then, he brought us into the room and showed us, and I was like, ‘dog, that’s what we do. O-linemen in the sauna.’ It’s a great gift.”
In the past, with Brady, offensive linemen would usually find their presents in the locker room. In this instance, that wasn’t possible, so Maye had to come up with a creative idea on how to reveal his gifts.
During Christmas week, the quarterback had his offensive linemen gather together in a team meeting room. He had personalized cards, and when they opened them up, each contained a note with a picture of a large outdoor sauna.
Then, Maye put on the projector screen and showed his teammates more information on their gifts.
“He showed us on the big screen what it was and everything. It’s something that’s a process,” Vederian Lowe said. “It’s a huge thing you can’t just (bring it to the stadium). It was a whole thing. It’s a great gift.”
The next step was how the offensive linemen would receive it. In this case, each player texted their address to Maye, and the quarterback will have the saunas shipped to their residence.
Wilson said his sauna will stay in Massachusetts. Morgan Moses plans on having his at his home in Washington, D.C. Lowe plans to set his up at his house in Arizona . Ben Brown said his homeowner association won’t allow saunas outside, so he’s going to get creative.
“I think all the boys are hyped up. Very kind and very generous of him to give such a great gift. I think we’re all very excited,” Brown said. “Mine’s going to Mississippi at my house, in my garage.”
Playing in his 12th NFL season, Moses is accustomed to getting Christmas gifts from quarterbacks. He’s looking forward to having his new sauna in his backyard and enjoying some peace. The veteran right tackle said each one represents a special bond between a lineman and their quarterback.
“It’s always a blessing to have someone who cares enough about you to get you something,” Moses said. “He’s trying to get us to take care of our bodies. That’s what it is. The more we stay on the field, the more he gets to operate.”
