The Houston Astros are not off to the best start of the season, sitting at 9-16 on the year. While the Stros have struggled, Yordan Alvarez has still been hitting great. Now, the Astros are facing the Cleveland Guardians in a rubber match of a three-game set.
The Astros took an early lead in the game, thanks to Alvarez hitting a two-run shot.
The game opened with a Carlos Correa double to left field. The next batter was Alvarez. After fouling off a 1-2 pitch, the fifth pitch of the at-bat was a curveball from Tanner Bibee that hung in the zone too long. Alvarez then launched it over the wall to make it 2-0.
It was the 11th home run of the season for Alvarez, who leads the league. It was also the first of the series, although he did go two for five against the Guardians with three RBIs on Tuesday. Overall, he is hitting .3330 with 11 home runs, 26 RBIs, and a 1.203 OPS, all marks that are top five in the majors.
Alvarez has been on a home run tear this year. He has not gone more than three games in between bombs, and hit home runs in all three games against the St. Louis Cardinals in the series prior to this. While Alvarez is hitting home runs, the Astros are just 3-7 in games in which he has hit a home run so far.
The game is currently in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both teams have three hits, while the Astros have committed an error. Still, the only runs of the game have come from Alvarez’s two-run home run, as the Astros lead 2-0.
