The Colorado Avalanche on Monday secured forward Taylor Makar for the next two seasons, signing the 25-year-old to a two-year, $1.75 million contract extension that carries an average annual value of $875,000 through the 2027-28 campaign. The agreement is structured as a two-way contract in the first season before converting to a one-way deal in the second year, pointing out the organization's continued investment in the young winger.

Makar completed his first full professional season in 2025-26 after signing his entry-level contract on March 25, 2025. He made his professional debut with the AHL's Colorado Eagles on April 5, 2025, scored his first professional goal on April 19, and appeared in one Calder Cup Playoff game that spring.
During the 2025-26 season, Makar spent most of his time with the Eagles, recording 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 points in 52 regular-season games. He finished sixth on the team in goals, tied for 10th in scoring, and led all Colorado rookies in both goals and total points. In the Calder Cup Playoffs, he played all 17 games, contributing two goals and four assists as the Eagles advanced to the Western Conference Final for the first time in franchise history.
Makar also earned his first NHL opportunity, making his debut on Nov. 1 against the San Jose Sharks. He appeared in 12 games for the Avalanche, averaging 6:13 of ice time per contest while finishing without a point and posting an even plus/minus rating. He was one of only two Colorado players, alongside goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, to appear in more than five NHL games during the season without registering a point.
The extension also keeps the Makar brothers together in Colorado. Taylor skated alongside older brother Cale Makar in all 12 of his NHL appearances, making them the first siblings to play together for the Avalanche since the franchise relocated from Quebec. They joined Anton, Peter and Marian Stastny as the only brothers in Colorado history to accomplish that feat.

Before turning professional, the Calgary native spent three seasons at UMass before transferring to the University of Maine for his senior year. He produced career-best numbers with the Black Bears, accumulating 18 goals and 30 points in 38 games while tying for the team lead in goals, finishing second in scoring, leading the club with six game-winning goals, and helping Maine win the Hockey East Championship with a two-goal performance in the title game.
Drafted by Colorado in the seventh round, 220th overall, in the 2021 NHL Draft, Makar now enters the next stage of his development under a new two-year commitment from the Avalanche.
