As Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesus Sanchez was hurt in Sunday's 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles , it was due to an accident with a fan throwing at his wrist. While accidentally injuring the Blue Jays player in Sanchez, manager John Schneider would give insight into what happened.
Sanchez would leave the game in the middle of it after getting hit in the wrist with a ball thrown by a 12-year-old, according to Arden Zwelling, as there appeared to be miscommunication in wanting to play catch. Schneider would echo the same sentiments and also say that X-rays came out negative for Sanchez.
"Yeah, never know what you're seeing at the ballpark," Schneider said, via Jacob Calvin Meyer. "He was kind of talking with, I think, it was a 12-year-old kid, just talking with a kid, kind of going back and forth, and I think in a playful manner, almost like 'Hey, let's catch,' and I think that the kid took it literally and hit [Sanchez] with the ball, so not ideal. First time I've seen that. X-rays were negative on his wrist, his right wrist, so we'll check him out. But he was pretty sore and surprised, and as were we. Yeah, ball shouldn't be coming into the field of play."
Blue Jays ' Jesus Sanchez on the "misunderstanding" with the fan
Entering the Blue Jays' eventual loss to the Orioles, Sanchez had recorded a .287 batting average to go along with six home runs and 28 RBIs. Sanchez would also speak after the game about what happened and said it was a "misunderstanding."
"It was a misunderstanding. I wasn't trying to play catch right there with them. I just looked at them, and they thought maybe that I wanted them to throw the ball back to me," Sanchez said, via Meyer.
At any rate, it remains to be seen the severity of Sanchez's wrist injury and if it will require him to miss an abundance of time, as there's no doubt that this is an atypical situation.
