Will Zellers is having a strong World Junior tournament through two preliminary round games.
The Boston Bruins prospect has four points in three games thus far in the World Junior Championship. Three of those points have come from goals.
“He’s just a greasy goalscorer. He gained more confidence at North Dakota as he was going. That’s why we added him,” Team USA coach Bob Motzko told reporters “And right from Day 1, we saw it.”
Zellers was a late addition to Team USA . He had two goals and an assists in the United States’ win over Germany and picked up another goal in the 2-1 win over Switzerland.
“I want to have a chip on my shoulder. I want to prove not just to the coaches but to myself that I do belong here and I do deserve a spot on this roster,” Zellers told the Grand Forks (North Dakota) Herald . “To have a game like that and the trust from the coaches means a lot.”
The 19-year-old was acquired by Boston at last year’s trade deadline in a deal that sent Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche . Zellers is among the top freshman in college hockey. In 18 games for North Dakota, Zellers has 10 goals and five assists.
