A scary scene unfolded during the second period of a preliminary game between Team USA and Switzerland at the World Junior Championship.
Cole Hutson was struck by a puck near the back of his helmet/neck area. The Team USA defenseman fell to the ice and was quickly surrounded by his teammates.
He was tended to by trainers before being stretchered off the ice and taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
USA Hockey released a statement Saturday night noting Hutson was out of the hospital and back with the team. He’s considered day-to-day.
“It was a scary situation, no question,” Team USA coach Bob Motzko told reporters . “It’s a very close group of guys, and they responded. It knocks you back. The building was silent. But the good news is that he was released and is back with us.”
Hutson is in his second season at Boston University. In his first year with the Terriers, the defenseman led all first-year players with 46 points and 32 assists. He was also part of the gold-medal winning World Junior team last year.
The 19-year-old was selected by the Washington Capitals in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.
Team USA returns to action on Monday after a 2-1 win for its third preliminary game against Slovakia at 6 p.m.
