CLEVELAND — The Cavaliers broke up the core four and shook up the roster at the trade deadline . Now it's a two-month race to figure out how all the pieces fit together before the playoffs arrive.

The Cavs pulled off three trade deadline deals , effectively acquiring James Harden , Dennis Schroder and Keon Ellis in exchange for Darius Garland , De'Andre Hunter, Lonzo Ball and three second-round picks.

The Harden-Garland swap was perhaps the biggest deadline trade in the entire league considering the possible ramifications on the Eastern Conference playoff outlook. Now, it's a learning process for the Cavs to figure out how to best implement Harden's game and vice versa.

Coach Kenny Atkinson and the Cavs will have more time to dive into any scheme changes during the upcoming All-Star break. Already, though, Atkinson and his staff dug into all of Harden's old film to figure out how he might best fit with the existing roster as seamlessly as possible in an effort to incorporate as many little wrinkles as possible, particularly with how Harden can complement Donovan Mitchell .

"It's hard to plug Donovan into the equation, but I've looked at all the Houston stuff [with Harden], I looked at Clippers stuff, looked at Sixers stuff," Atkinson said. "I mean, heck, we ran two ATOs the other night. I stole them from [Mike] D'Antoni, like Houston stuff, nothing particularly new or innovative, but it's 'how do we get an advantage for him?' type stuff."

Cavs recap vs. Wizards: Sam Merrill dominates James Harden's home debut

Harden brings several potentially beneficial elements to a Cavs roster that's still on the younger side when it comes to playoff experience, at least compared to many of the other contenders in the East. In addition to Harden's scoring ability, president of basketball operations Koby Altman noted one of the main elements he liked the most would be Harden's ability to slow things down in a high-pressure playoff situation.

The Cavs and Harden can now enter a mutually beneficial situation in that way. He gets a better shot at a championship run, while they add a wealth of veteran experience, along with a top-75 player all time.

"We just had a film session right now, he picked up two things that the coaches didn't even see, right?" Atkinson said. "Like, little details. So it's going to really help our young players and our role players become better players."

The Cavs are in the process of adjusting their attack to fit Harden's skillset, particularly as one of the best pick-and-roll players of the last few decades. That was always a part of Garland's game (namely with Jarrett Allen ), but it might quickly expand in Atkinson's playbook as one of Cleveland's biggest potential advantages.

"Yeah, it becomes a bigger piece, obviously, with the pull-up 3-point shooting and the rolls to the rim," Atkinson said. "He's obviously got all the handle and the vision, but it's communicating with our bigs on where you want to screen, what kind of screen is it, do we run a drag, a double drag? I mean, he's got knowledge of all of that."

Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden (1) tries to drive past Washington Wizards guard Bub Carrington on Feb. 11, 2026, in Cleveland.

James Harden stats in Cavaliers home debut

In Harden's home debut as a member of the Cavs , he finished with a double-double (11 points, 13 assists). Instantly, his ability to see the court as an off-ball guard has made an impression, including a highlight-reel behind-the-back pass to Jaylon Tyson on a pick-and-roll that led to an easy dunk.

"He sees the game at a different level," Mitchell said after the 138-113 Cavs win over the Wizards Feb. 11. "He's out here creating, making plays, doing different things. And then obviously his gravity, right, it opens the lane for everybody else, and it's just continuous. I mean, he's coaching on the bench and in huddles. And that's why he's here."

Cavs column: With Cavaliers landing James Harden, it's NBA Finals or bust | Opinion

One thing Harden hasn't done much in his career, though, is play in an offense with two bigs. That will eventually come into play once Evan Mobley returns from a calf injury, which could come soon after the All-Star break. It'll require another level of adjustments.

But, the Cavs are taking it all one step at at time.

"I don't want to overload James right now [with], 'Hey, when Evan comes back,' like, we'll kind of cross that bridge when we come to it," Atkinson said. "We know it's coming. … We got to think about the spacing, isolation spacing, pick-and-roll spacing, what kind of sets are best when those two are together."

Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden reacts against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 11, 2026, in Cleveland.

James Harden, Donovan Mitchell form star backcourt

That spacing, though, is the key. With Garland either out or slowed by his nagging toe injury, the spacing the Cavs enjoyed in their 64-win regular season last year was diminished. With a healthy Harden, they can again put teams in more of a pick-your-poison situation.

"It gives me time to go stand in the corner and watch him operate," Mitchell said. "And then defenses have to respect me. Now everything is open for everybody else."

The way Mitchell and Harden play off one another is now one of the biggest keys for the Cavs as they try to ascend atop the Eastern Conference. So far, ego hasn't been a factor. Harden only took four shot attempts from the floor in the Feb. 11 win but said he didn't care and wouldn't start forcing shots just for the sake of padding numbers.

In their second game together on the road , Harden noted that Mitchell took a back seat because he had the hot hand. It's a kind of give-and-take the Cavs hope to build upon with their newly formed star backcourt.

"The last game in Denver , last couple minutes of the game, [Mitchell] just gave me the ball, let me facilitate and do what I do," Harden said. "You don't really get that from superstars in this league. And so that right there gave me the open welcome to, hey, you know, you have just as much freedom, we both have the same freedom."
