The Boston Red Sox 's 8-1 loss to the Washington Nationals became a bit fiery in the bottom of the fourth inning after Willson Contreras and Cade Cavalli got into a yelling match on the field. Contreras even threw his helmet at Cavalli, leading the benches to clear for both teams. While the situation was chaotic on all fronts, it appears one thing just isn't sitting right with Boston's interim manager Chad Tracy.
Shortly after the contest, Tracy revealed he heard the 27-year-old right-handed pitcher yell, "Sit down, boy," to Contreras after striking out the Red Sox first baseman. After Contreras was ejected from th contest, Tracy claimed he felt that Cavalli should have been ejected as well , according to ESPN.
"Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said he heard Cavalli yell, 'Sit down, boy' after striking out Contreras," reported ESPN.
"After everything that happened, the people that they chose that were going to leave the game, I just felt like the other pitcher should have been one of them, too," said Tracy. "That was my biggest complaint."
When asked what he specifically said to Willson Contreras , Cade Cavalli admitted he informed the 11-year veteran to "sit down." However, given it was a heated moment, Cavalli wasn't entirely sure what he had said.
"Asked what his specific words to Contreras were, Cavalli told reporters, 'I don't know,' claimed Cavalli. 'I just lose my head in it. I'm competitive. I just told him to sit down.'"
While Cavalli may or may not have called Contreras "boy" during their heated spat, that term does have a history of being racially charged, at least in the USA. ESPN reported that Contreras was asked if he felt like Cavalli's comments were racially charged, but the 34-year-old slugger admitted he was not sure.
"To be honest, I don't know," said Contreras when asked if he thought Cavalli's comments were racially charged. "[I'll] let MLB handle that… He struck me [out] on a good pitch. I was walking back to the dugout, and then he did what he did, and the rest was history. He was like, instigating, and I snapped."
