FOXBOROUGH - TreVeyon Henderson’s fourth quarter 65-yard touchdown run was great on its own.
His lead blocker, however, stole the show.
When Patriots quarterback Drake Maye saw Henderson reverse direction away from the pack and head around the left, Maye joined him sprinting downfield to help take out any would-be tacklers.
Maye pretty much kept pace with the speedy Henderson, throwing a block on Bills cornerback Tre”Davious White that helped clear the path for the running back to score.
Maye’s effort drew praise from Patriots coach Mike Vrabel.
“I think it’s great. I think it’s great that he can run, first off,” Vrabel said during his Monday presser. “Drake wants to do anything that he can to help this football team . . . that was good to see.”
Vrabel made a crack about Maye falling after throwing the block, but all in all, he was pleased.
So were his teammates.
“He’s just a competitor. That just speaks to who he is,” Rhamondre Stevenson said. “I’ll have to see the GPS on that. It looked like he was moving.”
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Maye reached the fastest speed of his career on the play.
“He was pretty fast,” center Garrett Bradbury said. “I think he was a little tired. He’s not used to running that far, that fast ... but that was pretty cool to see your starting quarterback giving that kind of effort on a run play.”
