The Cleveland Guardians will be without the services of Steve Kwan for some time.
On Thursday, the Guardians placed the two-time All-Star on the bereavement/family medical emergency list , according to reporter Tom Withers.
The Guardians will also be making more roster moves on Friday, added Withers.
The 28-year-old outfielder was still able to appear in the Guardians' series finale against the Washington Nationals at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Thursday, helping the team score a 3-2 victory. Kwan went 1-for-4 in the game.
It has been a tough season at the plate so far for Kwan . Through 54 games and 193 plate appearances, he's hit just .207 /329/.259 with only a home run and 12 RBIs.
The four-time Gold Glove winner is struggling to put balls in play, with just a .231 BABIP entering the Nationals game, though that can only suggest that things can get better down the road for Kwan. In the 2025 season, Kwan slashed 272/.330/.374 to go along with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs in 156 games.
Given the timeline for Kwan's absence, he will miss Cleveland's next home series against the Boston Red Sox , which begins this Friday. That series ends on Sunday before the Guardians hit the road for a back-to-back series away from home against the New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers .
It remains unclear whether Kwan, who began playing in the big leagues in 2022 with Cleveland, will be back sooner or later than the aforementioned timeline. It is also worth mentioning that he was scratched for a Guardians game against the Toronto Blue Jays last week due to a neck issue.
The Guardians are currently atop the American League Central Division standings with a 33-29 record through Thursday.
