As the trade deadline approaches, the St. Louis Cardinals have stayed firmly in the playoff hunt with their 47-40 record. Mightily helping their cause has been the play of outfielder Jordan Walker .
On Sunday, Walker hit his 20th home run of the season. He became the first Cardinal to have 20+ home runs and 10+ stolen bases in their first 87 games since Albert Pujols in 2009, via Sarah Langs of MLB.com.
The Cardinals ultimately came up short against the Chicago Cubs 6-4 on Sunday. Walker drove in all four of those runs, as he hit a sacrifice fly following his three-run blast. Despite the loss, St. Louis has won five of their last seven games. They'll look to regain their momentum behind Walker's bat in their next series against the Milwaukee Brewers .
Alongside those 20 home runs, Walker is hitting .292 with 67 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. He leads the Cardinals in all four categories. At 24-years-old, the outfielder has seemed to put all the pieces and found his footing at the major league level.
It wasn't long ago that he was considered one of the best prospects in baseball. In 2023 specifically he was the top ranked prospect in St. Louis' organization and fourth-best in MLB. However, his first three years in the majors had been a struggle. In 2025, Walker hit .215 with six home runs, 41 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
Under team control for the foreseeable future, the outfielder is set to be a staple of the Cardinals lineup as long as he keeps up his pace. If so, perhaps St. Louis' rebuild is accelerated faster than expected.
