Seattle Mariners star Julio Rodriguez was forced to exit Thursday's 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels after taking a shot in the back of the head from an errant throw while rounding the bases. With the club scheduled to take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, the team announced several roster moves, including a trip to the IL for Rodriguez.
The Mariners announced that the 25-year-old outfielder is being placed on the 7-day IL with a concussion. Other roster moves Seattle made on Friday include recalling Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Tacoma and shifting Cooper Criswell to the 60-day IL.
"Roster moves: Miles Mastrobuoni, INF/OF, selected from Triple-A Tacoma," said the Mariners. "Julio Rodríguez, OF, placed on the 7-day Injured List (concussion). Cooper Criswell, RHP, transferred to the 60-day Injured List (right shoulder strain)."
It's said that the reason why Criswell is being shifted to the 60-day IL is so the club can make room on the 40-man roster for Mastruboni, according to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. Mastruboni could make an appearance against the Blue Jays on Friday.
"This roster move is official. To make room for Mastrobuoni on the 40-man roster, Cooper Criswell has been transferred to the 60-day IL," reported Kramer.
Julio Rodriguez will miss at least the next seven days on the 7-day IL. However, he will also have to pass concussion protocol before returning to action. While it's a long way from being a worst-case scenario, not having the five-year veteran in the lineup is not great either. Rodriguez this season owns a .259 batting average and .323 OBP with 89 hits, 14 home runs, 40 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases.
With the three-time All-Star ruled out, the Mariners will rely on Victor Robles at center field in Friday's contest. Robles may be the go-to replacement for Rodriguez while he works his way back from a concussion.
