The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks both lost key players for the rest of their series finale matchup at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
During the fifth inning of the National League West rivalry showdown, Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy , who recently had an injury scare, hit a grounder that went past the first base bag before getting played by Diamondbacks first baseman Ildemaro Vargas . Both players sprinted to first base at full speed before colliding hard with each other.
Muncy and Vargas immediately dropped to the ground in clear pain after impact.
Later on, both players left the game , as reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
"Dodgers' Max Muncy and Diamondbacks 1B Ildemaro Vargas with a violent collision at first base, leaving both players on the ground for several minutes with each coming out of the game," Nightengale posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Muncy was 1-for-2 before exiting the contest, while Vargas was 0-for-2.
The Dodgers sent Santiago Espinal into the game as Muncy's replacement. The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, replaced Vargas with Pavin Smith .
It remains to be seen the true extent of Muncy's and Vargas' injuries, but they are certainly unable to help their respective teams on the field. More detailed updates on their statuses should come following the game.
In any case, the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks hope that their players did not suffer something serious enough that will cause them to miss additional time.
Muncy entered Thursday batting .251/.346/.513 with 14 home runs and 22 RBIs in the 2026 MLB season, while Vargas, who is having a solid campaign , started the day hitting .286/.314/.448 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs.
