MLB rumors: The 'X factor' that may change everything for Red Sox at trade deadline appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The Boston Red Sox have struggled for most of the season. The Red Sox could certainly end up selling at the MLB trade deadline . However, with recent improved play, the Red Sox are not guaranteed to sell . Buster Olney of ESPN recently revealed the potential "X factor" that could determine whether or not the Red Sox sell before the trade deadline.
"The X factor in this situation is the tenuous status of chief baseball officer Craig Breslow , who may be in jeopardy of losing his job — especially if the Red Sox fade out of contention. Will that fuel his aggressiveness? Would ownership co-sign on expensive pre-deadline acquisitions? We'll see," Olney wrote in a recent article.
Breslow, the Red Sox's chief baseball officer, will have a big decision to make. If his job is indeed in question, one has to wonder if going all in and buying at the trade deadline will appeal to him. Turning Boston into a contender could save his job, but that approach is also especially risky. A proper rebuild could help the Red Sox in a crucial manner from a long-term standpoint.
The team is 37-48 as of this story's writing. They are in last place in the American League East standings and 13.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place. However, Boston is only six games back in the AL Wild Card. The AL is rather weak this year, so the idea of the Sox making a Wild Card run is not out of the question.
