Ian Rapoport explains why Patriots believe in Drake Maye
Speaking about Drake Maye's path to becoming the New England Patriots quarterback, Ian Rapoport detailed how strongly the organization valued him during the draft process.
Rapoport said the Patriots were presented with significant trade offers for the third overall pick but refused to move back because of their conviction.
"We know by now that the Patriots had significant offers to move on from the #3 pick, collect picks and build from there. They did not want to go anywhere. They believed that Drake Maye was worthy of the #1 overall selection. That is why they took him when he fell to them at #3."

According to Rapoport, that belief has only grown as people inside the organization have gotten to know Maye more closely.
Why Rapoport thinks Maye will produce a wow moment
Rapoport said conversations with people close to Maye consistently point to his leadership and presence inside the locker room.
He emphasized that those traits are already shaping how teammates and the organization view the quarterback.
"His emotional quotient is off the charts. Teammates freaking love this guy. He is the kind of guy, whatever happens here, this is the thing that people are going to want to play for the Patriots, want to play for Drake Maye."

He added that Maye's creativity is what could produce a defining moment on the biggest stage.
"His off-schedule stuff is so fun, so interesting, and so creative that he is going to do something tomorrow that we are all going to go, 'Wow.' I have no idea what it is going to be. But it is going to be really fun to watch."
For a Patriots franchise looking toward a new era, Rapoport's comments frame Maye not just as a long-term project, but as a quarterback capable of delivering moments fans remember.
