The MVP race between Drake Maye and Matthew Stafford is heating up. While some aren’t ready to commit to the New England Patriots quarterback winning the award, J.J. Watt believes it’s Maye’s to lose.
“I do know that they take team records into account, whether you think that’s right or wrong,” Watt said on CBS on Sunday . “I do know that looking at a first-place team in their division and looking at a third-place team in their division might weigh into some people’s voting factors saying, ‘We can’t give the MVP to a guy who finished third in his division.’
“I am not saying that that’s correct. There are so many different factors that go (into it),” he added . “Also, my thing is ‘valuable.’ If you took that guy off their team, which team drops down further? And I mean, for me right now, I feel like if you take Drake Maye off the Patriots, they’re dropping further down right now. As great as Matthew Stafford is playing, Sean McVay, Puka Nacua , Davante Adams , you can kind of piece it all together with the Rams.”
Many have pointed to New England ’s schedule and believe it’s the reason for the success it had this season. But Maye has taken a big step in Year 2 and threw five touchdowns to five different receivers in Week 17 against the New York Jets while being without Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins .
Maye eclipsed the 4,000 passing yard mark and has put his name in the Patriots and NFL history books throughout the season.
Stafford has play well, too, this year. Statistically, an argument can be made for both quarterback’s to win the annual award.
But Maye has done more with less all year, and helped his case even further on Sunday when he went 14-of-18 for 191 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots’ Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins .
