NHL rumors: Rasmus Andersson set to sign long-term extension with Golden Knights appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
Rasmus Andersson played a key top-four role on the Vegas Golden Knights ' blue line as the franchise came within two victories of a second NHL championship in four seasons this spring.
Although it ended in disappointment — and a six-game loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in the Stanley Cup Final — all signs point to the Knights locking up the defenseman long-term as their contention window remains wide open, as reported by The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta on Tuesday.
"By now, we've all heard the speculation that a handshake agreement was made when Vegas traded for Andersson and that's expected to be carried out," the hockey insider wrote.
"With the Golden Knights sitting at $4.265 million in salary cap space, plus the $8.8 million tied to Alex Pietrangelo , Andersson's new deal is expected to sit somewhere in the $7.5 million to $9 million range, per season once all is said and done. The Knights can create more cap space if they find a new home for goaltender Adin Hill , who has a $6.25 million AAV over the next five seasons."
The Knights are expected to move Hill at some point this summer. Pagnotta also reported that Pietrangelo is unlikely to play during the 2026-27 campaign.
That should free up the cap space necessary to get the Swede locked up long-term.
The 29-year-old was traded to the strip from the Calgary Flames back in January, with Zach Whitecloud , Abram Wiebe, a 2027 first-round pick, and a 2028 second-round pick going back to Alberta.
Considering the haul Knights GM Kelly McCrimmon gave up to acquire Andersson, it was widely believed he and the Golden Knights had already discussed a long-term extension before the trade was completed.
No contract can officially be signed until Wednesday when free agency opens, but if Pagnotta's reporting is accurate, it won't be much longer before the rearguard puts pen to paper.
The former second-round pick finished the 2025-26 season with 47 points in 81 games split between the Flames and Knights, adding another six assists in 22 Stanley Cup Playoff contests.
Now, all indications are that Vegas intends to make him a cornerstone of its blue line for years to come.
