Anticipation among fans and the media often peaks around the first week of February. It also marks a final shot for all 30 teams to lock in their rosters for the season. A period when several narratives and speculations gain momentum, especially around the big names in the league.
Nonetheless, the buzz around the deadline has been comparatively higher this season. A lot of it has to do with last year's shocking trade of Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis , which sent shockwaves through the league. One could also add Jimmy Butler 's exit from Miami to the list.
However, it is rare for superstars to be moved at this time of the season, given the time-sensitive nature and limited room for negotiation. Shedding further light on it recently was NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade on his podcast, sharing his detailed analysis.
"Trade deadline is always tricky because there's always a lot of noise. And most trade deadlines, nothing happens. No big whales really move in the midst of the season. I think most whale conversations happen in the offseason. It's because there's so many moving parts to it," said D-Wade, strengthening his case with the 2005 Miami Heat multi-team trade example involving Antoine Walker, Jason Williams, James Posey and Andre Emmett.
Not enough time
As Wade mentioned earlier, there are too many moving parts when it comes to getting the best deal around the deadline. The three-time champion also felt it wasn't a level playing field for everyone and that a lot was at stake, with one small lapse changing history.
"When someone knows they got the upper hand in trade deadline, they be hanging up the phone. They're not picking up … And they playing hardball. You might want to wait a little bit if you're going to move a whale until you can really get something that your fan base, the organization, can at least sell," Wade continued.
"Cause you move a whale, what you selling to the fans that's buying them tickets? What the concession going to look like? What them small businesses around going, how they going to fill their quota?" added the veteran guard, who felt the Luka-AD trade sounded like lasagna.
While Wade does make a valid point, there have been some interesting developments in the trade market lately. Starting with the Memphis Grizzlies trading star forward Jaren Jackson Jr. to the Utah Jazz . Another notable trade between James Harden and Darius Garland followed. Nevertheless, Giannis Antetokounmpo remains the center of attention.

Another blockbuster mid-season trade on the cards?
Though it is unlikely to succeed the Luka-AD trade between the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers , Giannis getting traded would be breaking news. Nevertheless, the Milwaukee Bucks ' MVP has reportedly expressed interest in being traded for some time now.
Some of the popular suitors currently include the New York Knicks , Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat. Whatever the destination, Giannis' moving out of Milwaukee changes the current NBA landscape to a large degree.
Hence, if a Giannis trade falls through, D-Wade may need to rethink his perspective on big names being shipped at the deadline. Since this would mark the second consecutive year an All-NBA superstar has been traded.
