While the Miami Heat could be headed for big changes coming in the offseason with the amount of rumors flying around, there is also a question regarding veteran guard Norman Powell. As the Heat's guard tandem of Powell and Tyler Herro was a tough situation to figure out, as head coach Erik Spoelstra said Thursday, the former now heads into a potentially uncertain offseason.
Powell was traded to Miami last offseason, and it proved to be a great year, earning his first All-Star nod and averaging 21.7 points per game, though the second half of the season was filled with bad health luck, illness, and a sudden change of role to bench.
While the shift to the second unit was a way to get his feet under him and Herro returning, it was still a jarring change.
Now, Powell's current contract ends this offseason as he'll be an unrestricted free agent, with the 32-year-old saying he's "not sure" what the direction looks like at the moment.
"I'm gonna talk to my agent. My agent is gonna talk to Pat [Riley] and the front office and figure those things out," Powell said after Thursday's exit interviews. "So I'll connect with my agent sometime next week and figure out how those conversations went, and then we'll start the game plan from there, what free agency looks like and what the next couple of weeks look like."
Norman Powell on outlook with the Heat
Powell would then be asked about wanting to return to the Heat, which would lead him to talk about how much he enjoyed his first year with the team. While the season ended in disappointing fashion with a 10th seed finish and losing in the first play-in tournament game to the Charlotte Hornets, the bonds he formed are ones he'll remember from his first year with the franchise.
"It's all about how everything is worked out. You can want things and stuff like that, but it's all about what makes the most sense," Powell said.
It remains to be seen what Powell's future looks like with Miami.
