FOXBOROUGH — It hasn’t always been the prettiest offensive tape, but Drake Maye has won back-to-back games to begin his playoff career.
Against a pair of the NFL’s best defenses, the 23-year-old quarterback has thrown four touchdown passes in double-digit wins, but Maye has also fumbled the ball six times.
After starting the postseason with two games at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots offense will enter hostile territory for the first time in the AFC Championship with a raucous Denver crowd.
On Thursday, Mike Vrabel outlined his expectations for Maye in the hard-to-play-in environment.
“Lead our offense,” Vrabel said. “Be the conductor. Help us handle the environment. Find as many positive plays as you can. Take care of the football. Own the operation. Then you’re going to have to make some big time throws. That’s just kind of how this thing goes.
“No different than what we’ve expected of him the entire season and how he’s produced. It’s great to see some not-so-positive plays that don’t affect some things that have to happen later in the game for us to succeed.”
That resilience was displayed tangibly in last weekend’s divisional round win over the Texans. After fumbling the ball four times in the snow, Maye still had the fortitude to hang in the pocket and hit Kayshon Boutte for a 32-yard touchdown on a go ball.
