The Philadelphia Phillies made a pivotal change on Tuesday, making a major leadership transition while also receiving encouraging news about one of their most important players. After opening the season 9–19 over their first 28 games, JT Realmuto’s progress provided a rare positive development. All of it unfolded within hours, underscoring the urgency surrounding the organization as it works to reset expectations and regain control.

The Philllies fired the club’s manager Rob Thomson after a 9–19 start, marking the franchise’s worst opening stretch in more than two decades. Shortly after, the Phillies named Don Mattingly as interim manager, signaling an immediate shift in direction as the season threatens to slip away early.
Amid that turbulence, Realmuto’s injury status became a key roster storyline. The veteran catcher has missed time since last Tuesday with lower back spasms, but his recent activity brings him closer to returning to game action.
The Athletic’s Matt Gelb shared the latest update on X, formerly Twitter, providing details on Realmuto’s pregame work Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park.
“In actual baseball, J.T. Realmuto (back) is taking BP on the field. He did agility in the outfield. He’s eligible to return Saturday and is trending that way.”
Realmuto’s ability to take batting practice and complete agility drills suggests his recovery has reached an important phase. If his progress continues, he could be activated as soon as Saturday.

The Phillies have struggled in his absence, relying on depth options while missing his leadership behind the plate. Realmuto remains one of the league’s most respected defensive catchers and a steady presence in the lineup.
As Philadelphia adjusts to Mattingly’s arrival, Realmuto’s potential return could provide needed stability for a roster searching for momentum. For a team facing early pressure, his recovery offers a meaningful boost during a turbulent stretch to open the 2026 MLB season.
