The Philadelphia Phillies committed a three-year, $45 million contract to aging catcher JT Realmuto because they believe he is a stabilizing force who can help prop up their World Series ambitions during the 2026 campaign. Even if his numbers do not always reflect it, the three-time Silver Slugger and two-time Gold Glove Award winner is incredibly valuable to this franchise. Therefore, the team and fan base should be thrilled by the latest news.

Realmuto will avoid a lengthy stint on the injured list after taking a foul ball to the foot in the first inning of Tuesday night's 6-0 road loss versus the San Francisco Giants . His X-rays came back negative , according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. Rafael Marchan will start in his place on Wednesday, but this is probably the best outcome the Phillies (6-5) could have hoped for after the three-time All-Star exited early against the Giants.
Although fans have grown quite fond of Realmuto, one of the reasons why some people were worried about re-signing him is his health. No. 10 underwent knee surgery in 2024 and continues to log loads of innings behind home plate. This specific injury was obviously just bad luck, but a decline seems inevitable. Philly believes he still has quality baseball left to give, however.
JT Realmuto has two multi-hit games in April and is slashing .240/.406/.400/.806 through 25 at-bats this season. The 35-year-old native of Del City, Oklahoma may not be able to blast 20-plus home runs in a single campaign anymore, but he is still a difference-maker on a lineup that is frequently facing questions about its depth. The Phillies managed only four hits without him on Tuesday, and 2025 National League Cy Young runner up Cristopher Sanchez surrendered 11 hits in five innings pitched.
Realmuto will rest up and watch intently during the team's rubber match against San Francisco (4-8).
