Contreras and Cavalli became the center of a benches-clearing incident on June 30 at Fenway Park after Cavalli struck him out. The exchange escalated after Cavalli directed a controversial remark toward Contreras, prompting both dugouts to empty and leading to multiple ejections.
MLB later disciplined several players involved in the confrontation. Cavalli and Contreras each initially received seven-game suspensions, while Nationals pitcher Miles Mikolas and Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton also received discipline. Cavalli's suspension was later reduced to five games after appeal.

NESN took to X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday and shared a clubhouse clip of Contreras addressing where things stand with Cavalli after the incident.

" Willson Contreras says he hasn't heard from Cade Cavalli following their altercation, but is open to chatting with the Nationals pitcher at some point 👀"
Contreras then explained his position while accepting responsibility for his role in the confrontation:
"I'm open to reunite or have a meeting with him, for sure. I'm not a guy that holds grudges against people. I'm at fault as well, and that's why I apologize."
The quote matters because the Red Sox first baseman did more than keep the door open. He acknowledged his part in the incident, helping shift the story away from anger and toward accountability.

Cavalli previously apologized publicly for his remark, but Contreras' comments clarified that the two have not resolved the matter in person. That makes any future conversation meaningful for both players.
For Boston, the timing also matters. The club needs the conversation to move away from discipline and distraction while the season continues. Contreras now has a chance to help turn a volatile moment into a calmer ending.
