The Columbus Blue Jackets are working to resolve Zach Werenski's future with the team. Werenski is not seeking a contract extension with the Blue Jackets . And Columbus could maximize his trade value by moving him this summer. It appears as if the team is serious about this. So much so they they've presented their franchise star with a trade proposal to the Dallas Stars .
For those monitoring this situation, the Werenski trade watch will continue. Columbus and Dallas reportedly agreed to a deal involving the Norris Trophy winner. But he has elected not to approve this trade, invoking his no-movement clause.
"Sources say Zach Werenski was presented with a trade option to a team he's unwilling to waive his NMC for. His #CBJ situation seems to be devolving. Werenski never formally requested a trade, but has had honest talks about the future since April. Unclear where this goes next," The Athletic's Chris Johnston reported on social media .
It was TSN's Darren Dreger who reported that the Stars were the team that stepped up . "I believe Dallas was team that stepped up and presented a trade option CBJ was willing to work with. Sounds like Werenski's preference is to stay east," Dreger reported.
It's unknown what the full trade would have been. However, one detail has emerged . Stars defenseman Thomas Harley would have joined the Blue Jackets in this deal, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Werenski is coming off his second 80+ point season. This effort earned him the Norris Trophy in 2026 for the first time in his career. He has two years remaining on his contract. Next summer, his no-movement clause becomes a 10-team no-trade clause. The Blue Jackets are looking to get ahead of his inevitable departure by moving him this summer in the midst of a robust trade market.
