It's been 10 years since the Chicago Cubs ended 108 years of futility by winning the World Series. The 7th game became etched in baseball lore . It was a classic back-and-forth battle against Cleveland , with a rain delay and individual heroics.
Former GM Theo Epstein is sharing aspects of what went into that 7th game . One of those stories included witnessing a phone call from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred , per Lovable Reunion with David Ross and Anthony Rizzo .
Epstein told his former players that Manfred received a call from the head of Fox Sports requesting that the 7th game be pushed to the next day. This was due to the rain delay, and to get more money and viewers.

"The Commissioner got a call, and he takes it, and I'm kind of listening in," Epstein said. "I'm like that can't be what I think it was. He hangs up and he was like "you won't believe who that was, that was the head of Fox. They were asking about the rain and they said if we can suspend this game right now and pick it up tomorrow night in primetime, it's going to be to worth 25 million more viewers."
Ultimately, Manfred responded, "We can't f****** do that".
At one point, Epstein considered the possibility by referencing pitcher Aroldis Chapman .
"We will have Chapy rested," Epstein said.
Chapman pitched the remaining 1.1 innings of Game 7, even after blowing a 6-3 lead in the 8th inning on the Raja Davis home run. Ultimately, the Cubs held on to win 8-7.
