For a long time, NBA draft conversations have usually revolved around one clear, generational headliner. However, this upcoming 2026 draft class feels different — there isn't just one or two centerpiece talents, but a cluster of players who each carry the potential to become franchise cornerstones.
And that's exactly what's caught the attention of Hall of Famer Charles Barkley . The 1993 MVP highlighted a few prospects he believes are destined to make an immediate impact — starting with AJ Dybantsa from BYU and Caleb Wilson from North Carolina .
"AJ, I think, is a sure thing. The guy I'm most impressed with is Caleb Wilson from North Carolina. AJ Dybantsa is the only player I'd take before Caleb Wilson. I think he's fantastic; got hurt unfortunately," the former 11-time All-Star said . "I think Caleb Wilson has the most upside in this draft."
Wilson and Dybantsa are exceptional
Starting with AJ — he definitely has the offensive polish required to make it big in the NBA. Averaging a conference-leading 25.5 points along with 6.8 rebounds per game in his freshman year, Dybantsa showcased the ability to create his own shots while also using his athleticism to grab rebounds and also possessing the knack of creating for his teammates.
Not only can Dybantsa get to the free-throw line, but he is also a high-level defender. So, even though he may not have the ball in his hands right away, AJ has the potential to run off the ball and knock down shots. Even though his 33 percent shooting from the three-point line needs refinement, the BYU product's mid-range game has the necessary tools to anchor a franchise.
On the other hand, Wilson presents a different kind of intrigue. Despite an injury-hit season at North Carolina that saw him miss stretches, including the NCAA Tournament, Caleb showed glimpses of elite two-way talent whenever he was out on the floor. The UNC star averaged 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Unlike NBA forwards, he didn't rely on three-point shooting; he operated as a traditional big man who imposed his dominance in the post by staying in his position.
Barkley named one more player
Interestingly, Barkley also named Darryn Peterson as another high-quality youngster he believes has all the tools to make it big. His 20.2 points per game average gave Charles confidence, but the fact that Darryn's freshman year felt like a soap opera at times makes the NBA legend question his ability to be drama-free and focused in the NBA.
" The third guy? Peterson has all the tools, but he has all the questions also," Barkley added. "And those are fair questions. But AJ and Caleb are my No.1s."
So, it seems safe to state that this isn't just a one-player draft. Rather, multiple prospects could make it big, and whichever teams land them won't just be drafting a quality young asset, but a potential All-NBA, MVP-caliber player if they develop and use them properly.
