While St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol tries to deal with his team’s ugly mistakes, JJ Wetherholt keeps on getting hit . That’s “hit” and not “hits.” Wetherholt is close to tying a unique MLB record, according to a post on X by Codify.
“J Wetherholt has been hit with a pitch in each of the last 5 games. The longest-ever MLB HBP streak is 6 games.”
It’s not exactly Joe DiMaggio’s hit streak. And it doesn’t take a whole lot of talent to stand there and let a ball hit your body. But then again, it probably hurts quite a bit.
However, it should also be noted that four of the five body shots came on breaking balls that hit the lower leg. Not exactly a torture chamber.

Things are going so well that Wetherholt may be able to get a long-term deal done with the team. Other teams have done likewise with their young stars , and Wetherholt took notice, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch via Sports Illustrated.
“It’s super, super cool, and I’m happy for him,” Wetherholt said of Konnor Griffin of the Pittsburgh Pirates . “… I think about it a little bit. Some of those guys are similar prospects like me. I am happy for those guys.”
Wetherholt is 23 years old. He’s slashing .228/.376/.354. The power leaves something to be desired, but at least he has three home runs and 11 RBIs. However, he has just one other extra-base hit in 79 at-bats.
Still, Wetherhold already has a multi-homer game on his resume. It came last week against the Cubs.
Marmol said it was great to see Wetherholt cut loose, according to MLB.com.
“That’s awesome from a confidence standpoint, because he’s working hard,” Marmol said. “And it’s one of those ones where we’ve discussed it. You’re not worried, because he knows what he’s doing, how he’s going about it, how he’s going to get back to where it’s expected.”
Wetherholt played it off as part of the process.
“It’s always great when you can do something to help the team win,” Wetherholt said.
