The Red Sox face a lot of questions this offseason , including how they want to construct their infield.
Alex Bregman opted out of the final two years of his contract in November. The Red Sox have expressed desire to re-sign him, but it’s unclear if the two sides will come to terms on a contract. Bregman finished the 2024 season with a .273 batting average with 18 home runs and 62 RBI — numbers that likely would have been inflated had he not missed 43 games due to a quad injury.
Boston has also been connected to veteran first baseman Pete Alonso , but The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier named another free agent infielder as an “intriguing possibility” for the Red Sox.
“Multiple sources suggest they’re open to adding an additional complementary position player. One intriguing possibility: Switch-hitting infielder Jorge Polanco , who slashed his strikeout rate from 30 percent in 2024 to 16 percent in 2025 en route to a .265/.326/.495 line with 26 homers,” Speier wrote . “The 32-year-old played second base and third for the Mariners , and is open to adding first to add to his versatility.”
The Red Sox didn’t commit to Triston Casas as their 2026 first baseman . His status for Opening Day is unclear after he suffered a serious season-ending knee injury in May.
Should Boston be unable to re-sign Bregman, it would need to address third base.
But Polanco primarily was Seattle ’s designated hitter last season. In order to make Polanco fit in the lineup, it’s likely the Red Sox would need to trade an outfielder — something they’ve been reported to potentially do this winter — and figure out what to do with Masataka Yoshida .
