The Cincinnati Reds are taking on the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, aiming to earn their 23rd win of the season. While the club owns a 6-5 lead through three innings, Tyler Stephenson got Cincinnati rolling early in the matchup after hitting a massive grand slam.
In the bottom of the first with the bases loaded, the 29-year-old catcher launched a moon shot to deep left field after hitting a sinker thrown right down the middle of the plate for a grand slam. The Reds took an early 5-0 run thanks to Stephenson, as the club had already recorded a run prior to his grand slam.
The home run is Stephenson’s third of the year, and it could be what turns around his cold start to the 2026 campaign. The seven-year veteran entered Wednesday’s matchup with a .184 batting average and .280 WHIP with 19 hits, two home runs, and seven RBIs, which is well below his career averages.
Although the Reds got off to a massive lead in the first inning, the Nationals are not going away. Washington scored four earned runs in the top of the second and another one in the top of the third, to keep the game close with Cincinnati. This game has been all offense, as both teams are hitting the ball well.
Cincinnati is playing well this year, but is still ranked last in a loaded NL Central. The Reds will need Tyler Stephenson, along with the rest of the team, to continue scoring runs if they hope to remain in the mix in one of the more competitive divisions in baseball.
