Bill Belichick believes the Chargers might have their work cut out for them against the Patriots in the AFC Wild Card game.
The former Patriots coach joined Jim Gray on the “Let’s Go!” podcast to discuss the upcoming playoffs, and Belichick thinks Justin Herbert’s broken hand and Los Angeles ’ season-ending injuries to Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater could make for a long day if the Chargers need to throw the ball a lot.
“If the Chargers have to play from behind, and pass block and try to protect and throw the ball 35, 40 times, I think they’re going to be in a lot of trouble,” Belichick said, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Belichick added if the Chargers can “get control of the game” and make it close, they have a chance against his former team.
“They certainly have the defense,” he said , “and if they have enough of a running game ... I think they would certainly have a chance.”
The last time the Chargers and the Patriots met was during the 2024 season when Los Angeles earned a 40-7 blowout win . The Patriots look much different in 2025 with Mike Vrabel as coach, Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator and Stefon Diggs at receiver. Drake Maye took a big step from Year 1 to Year 2 and has gotten everyone involved on the offense.
New England ’s offense has been incredibly productive this season, but it will be tested against a Chargers defense that ranked ninth in the NFL in points allowed.
