The New York Yankees swept the Washington Nationals to end the first half, mounting comebacks in each win. After a dreadful stretch to end June, they split four games against the Tampa Bay Rays . Then, the Yankees rolled into D.C. and smoked the Nationals' bullpen to secure the sweep .
"This was the first time the Yankees swept a series of 3+ games after trailing in the 8th inning or later of every game since May 1910 vs CLE. Last team MLB-wide to do so before this: June 2014 COL (vs SF)," Sarah Langs of MLB.com reported.
On Friday, the Yankees were down 3-2 to start the ninth inning. Jazz Chisholm Jr smoked a two-run homer in the final inning to take the lead, and Austin Wells followed with a solo shot for some cushion. After that 5-3 win, the Bombers were down 2-0 in the eighth inning on Saturday. Ryan McMahon , Trent Grisham , and Paul Goldschmidt all went yard in the eighth to secure the win.

Finally, going for the sweep on Sunday, the Yankees were down 3-2 thanks to a Chisholm error. Ben Rice picked up the second baseman , hitting a two-run triple in the eighth inning to take the lead. Paul Blackburn finished off the game with a two-inning save, picking up a tired bullpen.
The Yankees are three games behind the Rays in the AL East heading into the All-Star Break. Cam Schlittler was named an All-Star, but will not pitch on Tuesday night . Rice is participating in the Home Run Derby and is a reserve first baseman for the AL team. Aaron Judge was named a starter, but won't play due to injury. Cody Bellinger is also a reserve.
The Yankees have not had good injury luck and just went through a dreadful stretch. Still, they are well above the playoff line and are set up for a big second half.
