Baseball’s new ABS system

Major League Baseball has a new ABS system heading into the season.

Video Transcript

Major League Baseball is officially adding robot umpires.

The Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System, or ABS, will use the same Hawk Eye camera technology currently used in tennis' line calling system.

Each team will have two challenges per game, but if the game goes into extra innings, they'll get an additional challenge each extra inning.

Only the batter, pitcher, and the catcher can initiate a challenge, and the league also announced it is measuring the standing height of each player to determine their individual strike zone, which will be slightly smaller than the umpire's called zone.

Each review will be automatic and will only take 15 seconds.
