The San Diego Chargers select Eli Manning Remember this when Eli Manning forced his way off the Chargers?
Back in 2004, it was revealed in the time leading up to the draft that Eli Manning will reportedly refuse to play for the organization if they selected him with the number one overall pick.
Despite the threats, the Chargers took Manning with the first overall pick, only to trade him to the Giants less than an hour later.
Why didn't Eli Manning want to play for the Chargers?
Well, there was plenty speculation.
Some felt as though San Diego organization was in disarray, which turned Manning off from the idea of joining the club.
There was also rumors that Ryan Leaf, who was close with the Mannings, fed the family information about his time and staying away from the organization after retirement.
Eli Manning finally came out and said he was just worried about the Chargers organization at the time and gave them the heads-up in secrecy, but they didn't want to keep it a secret.
