It finally happened.
San Francisco 49ers star running back, Roger Craig, is finally, supposedly, according to multiple sources in the Bay Area, is going to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the class of twenty twenty-six.
After decades of being overlooked, the gold jacket is finally his.
Craig was not just a great running back, he changed what the position would inevitably become today.
During the 49ers dynasty run in the '80s, Craig was a central figure in three championship Super Bowls, thriving in the Bill Walsh revolutionary West Coast offense.
While the scheme emphasized timing and precision through the air, Craig became an ultimate weapon mismatch.
In nineteen eighty-five, Craig became the first NFL player ever in history to record a thousand rushing yards and a thousand receiving yards in the same season.
While this is something that Christian McCaffrey did do this year, in that day and age, this felt like something that was almost unimag- imaginable at the time.
That season, Craig led the entire NFL with ninety-two receptions, which was an unheard of number for a running back in that era.
Before Craig, backs who caught passes were often labeled situational or gimmicky.
Across his eight seasons with the 49ers, Craig compiled over seven thousand rushing yards, o- just under forty-five hundred receiving yards, and sixty-six total touchdowns.
Those numbers alone would place him among franchise greats, but Craig's true value went beyond statistics.
He was the connective tissue between Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.
His versatility allowed the 49ers to dictate matchups rather than to react to them.
For a player whose impact was so profound, the delay has always felt like a failure of perspective, because judging greatness through a modern lens without acknowledging who helped create it, feels like missing the point entirely.
With his induction into the class of twenty twenty-six, that oversight has finally been corrected.
Roger Craig's place in football history is now officially secure, not just as a 49er legend, but as one of the most influential players the game has ever seen.
