Angels' Owner Starts Spring Training With Off-Field Loss, Stating Winning 'Isn't Priority'

The Los Angeles Angels faced the Los Angeles Dodgers last weekend and suffered more than a loss on the field following Arte Moreno's comments.

Video Transcript

All right, ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to the West Coast Offense.

I am Lucas Stackpole, joined by Peter Pappalardo and Bob from Philly, Bob Hauck.

The team under the microscope today, for the, second time, because the battery just died, is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

And most importantly, baseball is back.

it's not opening day, but baseball is as back as it can be right now.

Spring training games started yesterday.

The Angels are actively playing the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Your score in that game, oh, my goodness, it is nine to nothing, Dodgers, in the bottom of the second.

Oh, great heavens.

That escalated incredibly fast.

That really got out of hand.

That got out of hand- Fast!

Good reference.

Uh- I stabbed a guy in the heart.

I think you should lay low for a while.

Yeah, boy, that escalated quickly.

I mean, that really got out of hand fast.

Oh, my gosh.

That's awesome.

Rick, where did you get a hand grenade?

And so anyway, the Angels, despite losing nine to nothing, do play today.

And again, we haven't seen any baseball, or at least any competitive baseball, since Game 7 of the World Series, so baseball is back.

It's a happy day.

Baseball.

Yeah!

Baseball.

Yeah.

Big shout out baseball.

And so the first topic of discussion, and the most interesting topic of discussion, everyone's favorite owner, Arte Moreno, spoke to reporters in Tempe, Arizona, saying that he's giving the fans what they want.

And so, listeners, I assume most of you are Angels fans, and so I want you to think to yourselves, what is it you want the Angels to do?

What do you want Arte Moreno to use his power for?

So I want you to think, I want you to think, I want you to think.

And if you said affordability, you would be correct.

So according to Angels owner, Arte Moreno, the number one thing fans want is affordability.

They want affordability, they want safety, and they want a good experience when they come to the ballpark.

Okay, so that quote alone, not crazy, right?

But he followed it up with, "Believe it or not, winning is not in the fans' top five."

Winning is not in the top five things that a fan wants out of a sports team.

And personally, before we even get into the logistics of any of this, as a sports fan, the two of you are sports fans, that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Yeah.

Well, I mean, when you're a fan of the team I feel like with success, then affordability kinda goes out the window.

We stop caring about affordability if our team is doing well.

I mean, not caring, like, not, not caring, but, like, you're willing to pay a lot more money when your team is- It's less of an issue successful.

Right.

Yeah.

So I would say that winning should be, obviously, I think go- this goes without saying, on the top of everybody's list.

And what in the hell is Arte Moreno talking about, saying that af- affordability is what we want the most?

No, it's not.

It's not, Arte.

The Angels wanna win.

I mean, that's, that's the craziest thing, is, again, in our first show before the camera died, Arte Moreno is worth $5 billion.

His net worth is 5 billion US dollars.

Legal US tender?

Legal US tender.

That's a lot of doubloons.

Yeah.

And- Shmicks, shinies I just, I mean, the, the biggest thing for me, again, even just as This, this is just such an out-of-touch thing to say.

I think that's the biggest thing, is just, I read this quote, and not even as an Angels fan, not even as a sports fan at all, I mean, this is just a guy who doesn't know his audience.

This is a guy who does not know his market, and the business model the Angels have created, I think now at least kinda reflects that.

I mean- It's, it's unbelievable to me that a billionaire can come out and say what a bunch of the fans want for their team.

And, I mean, what did he say, that he, that he did some, like some surveys?

Yes.

Yes.

He must have surveyed, he must have surveyed five people, and all of them were at gunpoint.

Okay, yeah, so for, for reference, or what Pete was saying, Arte Moreno, the information that he got this from allegedly comes from surveys the team has conducted.

They were all at gunpoint.

They had to be.

There's no other way.

Or just win- that winning wasn't even an option, and they said, "Oh, hey, people don't care about winning," but- Or maybe they off Maybe he offered, $5 billion of his US legal tender, part of that to them- Jesus to, give him the answer he wanted, so he could say this absolutely abhorrent statement.

Just such a slap in the face.

It is, and it's such a total slap in the face because, again, we are all baseball fans.

We know about the Angels, but none of us are actually Angels fans.

We're frauds, I'm sorry.

But- Oh!

but I will say, just Angels fans, I wanna put this in the discussion post actually after the show, 'cause I wanna know how real Angels fans feel about this.

But people watching this, I mean, let me know.

I mean, I totally lost my train of thought, but the, the, Ar- okay, Arte Moreno, the Angels are I think this is the worst possible thing to say to a fan base of a team like the Angels.

It's like if Woody Johnson came out, the owner of the Jets, it's like if Woody Johnson said, "Oh, yeah, Jets fans don't wanna win."

I mean- They just want the experience.

But the, the biggest thing with that is, if I'm a fan of, hear me out, the team with the longest active playoff drought in baseball, and not even that, the longest active drought in baseball, and the third-longest drought in all of American professional sports, if I have watched the Angels do nothing for the better part of 11 years, and then my owner, going into year 12 of this playoff drought, says, "Fans, believe it or not, winning is not in their top five," I mean, I would be livid.

That's just disgusting saying that.... as somebody, in a hypothetical world where I'm an Angels fan, if I'm working hard, if I'm paying my money to go see the Angels play, if I'm buying the Angels TV deal, if I'm buying Angels merch, like, if this team is seeing my money, and then a man worth more money than I'll see in 10 lifetimes is like, "Yeah, the fans, it's- winning isn't as important to them as you'd think," I mean, that's grounds for, like, burning a bridge.

Like, I mean, I don't know, maybe I'm just being overdramatic, but I mean, this is one of a very short list of things you can't say as an owner.

Back in the day, you'd be burnt at the stake for this.

Yeah.

You would be.

This is- You'd be bummed out insane to be saying.

And like, like we mentioned before, he's speaking for all of the Angel fans as if they haven't had to deal with over a decade of losing, constant losing.

Just, it, it's just embarrassing that your owner thinks that you don't wanna win.

Because, I mean, I can't, I can't, I can't even, like, put into words how embarrassing this is.

It's just ridiculous.

I think baseball with owners I think baseball and owners, the relationships between the owners and the teams are the most prevalent in Major League Baseball.

But I do think with the whole John Fisher meltdown and him uprooting the A's out of Oakland and moving- Wow them to Sacramento and then to Las Vegas, we could have a whole episode just on that.

But I think, you know, John Fisher was under the gun for a while, but I think now that that situation has kind of died down, I mean, the A's are in Sacramento, they're going to Vegas.

Like, like it or not, it's going to happen.

So now that that's kind of over, I mean, owners like Arte Moreno, Bob Nutting, the Monforts, that I believe own the Rockies, I mean, now that all the microscope is off of John Fisher, I mean, people are kind of starting to see the wider scale of these owners who are really just a lot like this.

I mean, how- winning is not in the top five.

I can't wrap my head around that.

As a fan, winning is top one, and it's- not remotely close.

I don't even think There's not even, like, I don't think there's a single fan base in the world that would, if you interview them, would say winning is not in their top five.

That's why you play the sport.

You play the sport to win.

And believe it or not, Mr. Arte, money- money comes in when you win.

So putting money into your team, you're gonna get a lot of money out.

And speaking of money, why don't you sign Shohei if you k- like, like we mentioned before, with the Dodgers, before we were rudely interrupted by the battery dying?

Brutal.

sh- the Dodgers have already made back Shohei's contract, his $700 million contract.

At that point, Angels, just throw a billion at him.

Like, what is- Yeah.

You would've- Agreed.

You would probably make it back within the next year or two, if you haven't already.

Like, it's just unbelievable to me how out of touch he is, and he thinks that his team, that his fan base doesn't care about winning.

And so, Pete, to kind of feed into your point, I mean, is affordability important as a sports fan?

I would say yes.

I mean, obviously, you wanna be able to go to a game, you wanna be able to buy a hot dog, you wanna be able to buy a beer, whatever.

Sure, that's fair.

But it's just economics.

I mean, the Angels have not been good.

We all know about the playoff drought, but the Angels haven't even had a winning season since 2015, the year after that, the year after their last playoff appearance, 85 and 77.

And since then, 2015, the Angels have not won more games in a season than they've lost.

And just to put that into perspective, I would've been 10 years old, and the last time the Angels had a winning record, Apple had just unveiled the iPhone 6, Taylor Swift was singing Shake It Off, and the world was still five years away from Covid.

It's absurdity, insanity.

And so again, so affordability, the Angels are affordable.

I went to an Angels game this summer.

My ticket, $14.

It's affordable, I'll give them that.

But again, it's Economics 101: demand is low.

Nobody is going to the games, so the demand isn't high.

There's no- nobody's buying the tickets, so they're cheap.

when demand is low, from like of, like for a losing team, low ticket prices get people in the door.

So Arte Moreno is taking credit for having a losing team that nobody wants to pay much to see.

concessions, according to a Sports Illustrated article where we're pulling this information from, price right around league average.

But I mean, again, and you move into safety, Anaheim, S- Orange County, Southern California as a whole, one of the nicest places in the country.

I mean, again, general safety is an important thing.

but one, I feel like safety inside of a Major League Baseball stadium, I mean, I feel like that should come as a guarantee.

Yeah.

and taking advantage of keeping what is already one of the safer areas of the country, what is already regarded as one of the most beautiful areas of the country, taking credit for keeping that safe, when in reality, you've had to do little to no work to do that.

I mean, on top of the sacrilege that is saying winning's not top five, I mean, all the points that he did try and make are also entirely superficial.

Like, Ar- Arte, look where your team is located, in the, in the, United States of America.

It is one of the safer places your team can be located.

I don't think you need to put safety above winning.

Like, I'm, I'm sorry, you really don't need to do that, and it's Like, that- like I, I could like I will give him the slightest bit of, like, leeway with the e- the affordability thing.

Fans do want an affordable experience.

But you can't also start trying to say that safety is, should be above winning, too, because you're in one of the safest places.

Like you mentioned, Zack, being- when you're inside the stadium, safe- safety should be a guarantee.

You don't need to- you're, you're trying to defend a problem that doesn't exist with your team, and I think you're just- I think that's more of a cop-out for the fact that he just doesn't wanna spend money on winning.

fun fact, though, Pete, because according to Arte Moreno himself, this, a quote from the man- for me, I've always wanted to win.

It's just, what's the cost of winning right now?

And it makes no sense to me, because Pete, you mentioned the Dodgers, and it's the opposite of-- it's still supply and demand, but it's the opposite of the problem the Angels currently have.

It's affordable because people don't wanna go.

But you look at the Dodgers, I mean, you're in Anaheim, go south on I-5 for an hour, you'll see how things should be.

I mean, you mentioned it, Shohei Ohtani, a guy Angels fans are quite familiar with, $700 million.

That is not a small amount of money.

But the Dodgers ponied up money for Shohei, big-time talent.

They ponied up money to surround Shohei with other big-time talent, and they made his contract back within the first season of him being there.

So I mean, it's-- you put money into the team, and you will get money out.

I mean, you'll get endorsements, you'll get people coming to games, people are gonna buy the merchandise, people are gonna buy food at the games.

You have to put out a watchable product.

I mean, we talked about this again, Bob.

You and I were talking about this at the last show before the camera died- Nice unfortunately.

Nice.

But, I mean, the Angels, this is a team that hasn't been good in 11 years.

We're gonna keep harping on that.

If they put out a contending team, if they were good for the first time in 11 seasons, people would be climbing over themselves to go.

Absolutely.

I think Angels fans would much rather spend 50 bucks on a game ticket to go watch a 95-win Angels team, than spend 14 bucks to go watch an Angels team that's winning 65 games.

I mean, you, you get out what you put in.

baseball, I firmly believe, should It's, it's a business, obviously, but I firmly believe it shouldn't be run like it's a business.

Like Steve Cohen, infinite money, all that money goes into the team.

The Dodgers, all the money goes into the team.

Arte Moreno, since you wanna treat this like a business, look at the profitability.

I mean, you have to spend money to make money.

Scared money doesn't make money, but it's a proven thing that works.

Again, not to keep mentioning the Dodgers, 'cause they're the evil-- they're the new evil empire, but look at, like, the early 2000s Yankees.

I mean, they're putting money into the on-field product, and they are seeing insane results, both money-wise and on-field success-wise.

you took the quote right out of my mouth.

I was gonna mention the scared money don't make money.

This is worse than scared money don't make-- this is like lazy money don't make money.

Mm-hmm.

He's, he's not trying to make money, and, like, even if he sits on his money and lets his team rot for another 10 years, he's still gonna be making money- That's the thing, at this point- which is the saddest thing in the world.

At this point, he's just kinda collecting his daily login reward, and that's, that's the hard part is 'cause, again, there are so many owners that this is just a business to them.

They don't care about the Angels, they don't care about the on-field product.

And, I mean, it's base-- it's Major League Baseball.

No matter what, it's always gonna be a profitable thing.

I mean, to your point, Pete, Arte Moreno probably I mean, he could not do a thing, and he could probably still make money off this season.

And that's just hard because people fall into that.

I mean, the owners have realized that they can do nothing and still make money.

And of course, I mean, the saying, the rich get richer, and I mean, and again, to his credit, if I could make a whole bunch of money by doing nothing, I would also do that.

But as somebody who You know, like, Angels fans, I mean, why-- if I'm an Angels fan, why is, why is Arte Moreno doing this to us?

If, if you're gonna- if you wanna sit around and make money doing nothing, and you're already, you already own $5 billion, go buy some- like, go buy into something like, what is Bob doing, again, newspapers?

I have no idea.

Like, buy, buy, buy into something like that.

Buy into something where you're not severely harming the well-being mentally of a, of large group of people.

Because if you want to just sit on money and let it, like, build up, if you wanna do that safely, just put your stupid money in, like, a bank or something.

Let, let it build up like that.

Put it into stocks.

You don't need to With $5 billion, you don't need to have an income.

But it- I can understand if you want to, just don't put, like, sports fans through this.

It's embarrassing, and it's hard for them.

It's a weirdly timely thing for me, 'cause I just was in a class the other day that was talking about stuff like this, with, like, him talking about surveys and such.

Doing surveys where you're Obviously, you're not gonna get every single Angels fan in the co- in the world, right?

Right.

That's just, that's ridiculous.

But if you're doing surveys with a select group of folks, you have to get what's called a, a representative sample.

So, like, you have to randomise it.

Obviously, he's just talking to a rand..., like, he probably handpicked the people he's talking to, or he's talking to people in the office calling them Angels fans.

How much of a slap in the face?

They have, they have to have so many international fans and people that don't live in the state that aren't gonna be able to go to games, because of the, the Shohei Ohtani years and whatnot, they have tons of international fans, I guarantee it.

They travel.

How much of a just, a F-U is it to them that he's like: "Yeah, winning doesn't matter"?

There's people in Japan that are waking up at crazy hours to watch this team, or people anywhere else that are waking up to watch this team at ridiculous hours.

That's just such a screw you to them.

They care about winning.

That's the only reason they're watching your team.

But seriously, man, or 17 minutes, there you go, you guys can do that.

But seriously, though, that's just brutal.

Like, I like watching the Angels here and there.

I, I like to watch them when they win.

I think the Angels are a fun team.

I don't care about affordability or safety.

Yeah.

Seriously, though, that's just so dumb.

Like, I mentioned in the last show before I got interrupted by the camera dying, which was brutal, screw you, Canon.

But, this reminds me of the Glazers, the Glazer family that owns Manchester United.

Like, people hate them 'cause they just don't care.

It is a business investment to them, and business executives are just destroying the sport.

It's brutal.

And to your I'm not trying to monopolise this too much, but you guys- Yes, please you guys have been letting me think about this a lot, and, like, it's, it's good, actually.

To your point about John Fisher earlier, I had mentioned a while back that the biggest problem with that, or one of the biggest problems, in my opinion, is that, is that he uprooted that historic team and took them to a city where they're gonna be a tourist team now.

Twenty-nine other owners looked at that and said literally nothing.... and this just goes to show they don't care.

They genuinely do not care at all.

He's amongst those 29 other owners that just simply doesn't care, and all they want- I think it's, it's just you can't put words into it how stupid that is.

And so, Bob, I mean, the Angels continue to have a rocky relationship with their fans.

I'll let you get into the logistics of the TV deal- Yeah just because I know you're a little more informed about it than I am.

But the Angels, it took them a while to come up with a TV deal.

I believe that they have, but first, the Angels aren't even airing any of their own spring training games, which I think is ridiculous.

again, spring training baseball, it's not the best baseball in the world, but for fans who haven't seen their teams play in five to six months, I mean, I'd wanna watch the Angels.

so the Angels are not broadcasting their own spring training games.

They're on-- You'll be able to watch them, but you'll be able to You'll have to watch them through them being broadcasted by the opponent, which I think is weak.

And for Arte Moreno, again, running this purely like a business, if you don't have a TV deal, you can't make money, and Arte Moreno said this.

a lack of a TV deal is impacting payroll, and secondly, that he's not going to spend money for the sake of spending money.

I mean, the second thing makes sense.

I mean, obviously you're not gonna spend money just for the sake of spending money, but it sounds like the Angels, one, don't have too much money to play with to begin with, and two, I mean, a lack of a TV deal-- Obviously, I don't know the ins and outs of business executives and TV rights and how baseball teams figure all of that out, but I feel like for a professional sports team in a densely populated part of the country, that surely has a decent enough following.

I mean, I feel like finding somebody to broadcast your games, I mean, I feel like that's kind of a layup.

Yeah, I can broadcast.

Yeah.

Angels, hit me up.

Yeah.

I do, uh- Let's stack broadcast.

I broadcast the Mount Saint Mary Knights games.

Yeah.

But- Sorry, I think, I think I just need to- No, thanks get the point through.

You looked confused- Yeah at first I was a little worried.

I know, I did.

No, but seriously, I mean, for as much as Arte Moreno likes to complain about not having money, which isn't even true, I mean, a lack of a TV deal, I mean, that seems like a pretty easy place to start.

100%.

Am I taking this one?

I do have all the information pulled up in front of me about the deal.

Please.

Oh, go ahead.

So just to go back to what you said about him la- complaining about money, he has made a note to mention this before, they're facing revenue losses because of this.

Mm-hmm.

But that is 120- Do something about it!

110, not even 110, 1000% on you, dude.

Like the SpongeBob- Oh, my God!

tattoo, the wanted poster.

Yeah.

Please, bro.

Like we were, I'm trying not to get too far off track, but we were, we were doing, guessing nicknames the other day, and you were wearing a Nets shirt.

That's actually perfect, the never- "Doesn't swing the rock," Michael Porter Jr., whatever.

Yeah.

Don't swing the rock.

Yeah, literally.

It's essentially you, bro.

It starts and ends, possession ends here.

That's the, the nickname- Yeah you go.

The, the team ends and starts with you, dude.

You have the possession already.

But anyways, so MLB has taken over the broadcasting rights, and to the point that you can't even watch spring training games right now is so dumb.

College baseball is in effect.

We were just talking about this.

I could probably go and find a Cal State Fullerton game easier than I could an Angels game right now.

That's a, that's a problem.

That is a genuine problem.

That is terrible.

If I can watch your local college team easier than I can watch your pro team, you have a problem.

Houston, there is a problem.

Or Anaheim, there is a problem.

But anyways- Angels are on the board.

The Angels are on the board.

Just go, yeah!

And so- On-field winning product, boys.

And so a massive, massive problem, Angels fans.

My deepest sympathies go out to you just for having to deal with Arte Moreno for the last 20 years.

So we will dedicate the last couple of minutes to this episode because we've been talking about Arte Moreno for 22 minutes.

we can actually talk about the Angels now.

We can talk about the on-field product.

the game right now not going great.

It is now 10 to two Dodgers in the top of the third inning.

but the- The fans don't care about that.

The fans, the fans don't care about that.

Talk about the scoring, right?

You guys really don't care about the score- Yeah obviously, because you can't even watch it anyways.

Well, I mean, well, that's what, that's what, according to Ar- Arte Moreno, the fans don't care about the winning products.

Okay.

They just, they care about affordability.

So obviously, spring training baseball, take this with a grain of salt, obviously not opening day lineup, but at first glance, this does look like it could be an opening day lineup for the Angels.

So fellas, let me know your thoughts.

Zach Netto leading off and playing short, Nolan Schanuel at first, Yoan Moncada at third, Jorge Soler, the designated hitter, Joe Adell, the right fielder, Josh Lowe, the left fielder, Logan Ohoppe, the catcher, Christian Moore at second, Bryce Teodoso in center.

And so my question to each of you guys is, how close is this to the actual opening day lineup?

We're looking a guy or two off, I feel like maybe.

It's mostly just, Teodosio.

I really don't see another guy that probably shouldn't be starting opening day, which if they're down 10 to two, I don't know what the, what lineup the Dodgers put out there, but that's kind of scary.

I mean, I, I like the lineup, it's just, it's such a question mark, like And know- knowing the fact that Moreno, I'm gonna keep on bringing him up for the rest of the day now, that he doesn't wanna buy into this team, this is like he's, he's just rocking with mediocrity.

And I mean, I hope this team overperforms.

I hope this team is a winning team.

Actually, would that be, would that even be a good thing?

'Cause then, what's-his-name, can just take credit for it, too.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That's what, that's literally what- It's a losing, it's a losing game.

Yeah.

He's gonna act like this was his plan all along if they start winning.

Yeah, I would have to put a lot of money into it for us to win.

He's like: "Hey, guys, look, yeah, the- The, the winning was the, the point.

Let's, let's talk about the, uh- I always wanted to win.

Let's talk about the 11 years before that.

Yeah.

Such a goof, man.

Well, the thing is, that just looking at this lineup, Mike Trout, obviously a glaring absence.

Mike Trout- I'm sorry, I totally forgot about that.

Is he, is he hurt now or is he just- He's just, he's just not playing.... Yeah, 'cause I'd assume, Adell would move to center and then Trout would move to right.

Yeah.

And then that would probably be your, your confirmed line.

I mean, Trout would probably be either leading off or batting second, or cleanup, just 'cause I kind of forget that he, like, smacks the hell out of the baseball.

Joey Gallo?

No, Mike Trout.

Oh, yeah.

I forget that he- It's Mike Trout!

Well, no, I- I forgot.

I've No, like, I forget that he has crazy pop- Oh, yeah and power.

Well- 'Cause, like, he hits a base, obviously.

Like, last year, that was, like, his biggest thing.

Yeah.

He, I don't think he hit for a high average, but he was hitting- Yeah a lot of homers.

Or I should say, I kind of forget that sometimes he's definitely a power hitter.

Mm-hmm.

'Cause I've always just thought of him as an all-around dude- Yeah who could do literally anything.

I mean, in his prime, he was, like, a top of the league power dude, while also doing everything else- But he was also just really- really, really well.

He was also just Jesus in his prime.

He's, he was the, he was the best at everything.

Shout out, Trouty.

And so, I mean, obviously, Mike Trout, the glaring absence from the lineup, and we can throw this back on Arte Moreno.

But this was a theme for last show, so, so as not to beat a dead horse, we can kind of skim through it.

But for Arte Moreno, if you're going to invest in a team that, like, like you guys were talking about, winning being the plan all along, I mean, if you're gonna put money in this team, now is the time to do it, just because this is a solid core.

I mean, I'm not gonna say it's great, I'm not gonna say it's generational, but it definitely could be much worse.

But I mean, Zach Netto, Nolan Shanuel, Joe Adell, Logan Ohapi, Christian Moore, I mean, all of these guys are younger than 27. and so, I mean, I know winning is not really in the fans' best interests, but if you're gonna put money into the team, do it now.

Do it now.

Now's the time.

That will not be happening, no.

No, it won't be happening.

No, 'cause they don't care about winning, obviously.

Right, the fans don't want winning.

The fans don't want winning, and they also don't, also don't have a TV deal, so Well, they sort of do, but they don't at the same time.

Yeah, true.

Fans have a package they can buy, but the broadcast is run by MLB, and they have the broadcasting team you guys don't like.

They want them back.

The, the, the Angels fans- Oh.

according to Moreno, the Angels fans value our podcast more than what- They do.

this just is- There's, there's a lot of safety and affordability to our podcast, 'cause it's free.

So shout out to the penny pinchers- And so- of the Angels front office.

Affordability and safety, the two pillars of the West Coast offense.
