Just when the Mets were finally having a good, fun stretch of baseball, a big injury.
Devin Williams is headed to the injured list with what the team is calling a right shoulder strain.
Now we don't know how long he's gonna be out or what it's gonna require, so a lot of speculation and a lot more information to come.
But what we do know is that this isn't a total surprise.
Devin Williams had been held out of action earlier this month due to arm fatigue, is what they were calling it at the time.
He's only pitched twice since the beginning of August.
One of those times was August second, his velo was way down.
The latest was August seventh, his performance was way down.
Now he's being placed on the injured list retroactive to August eighth.
What does that mean for the Mets' immediate future?
It means wide open, high leverage innings in the bullpen.
Kodai Senga closer?
Maybe.
Jeffrey Yan celebrations in the eighth?
Who knows?
We're gonna see, and anyone who wants a chance to be a staple of the Mets bullpen next year is gonna get plenty of time to show what they can do in the weeks and months to come.
The second thing this does to the Mets is it casts that twenty twenty seven bullpen into even more confusion and speculation because we don't know where Devin Williams is gonna be.
Now we have an injury to worry about.
He is the only part remaining in that bullpen after the Mets sold everything at the trade deadline.
Luke Weaver is gone.
Brach-joban's gone.
Guys that you thought could be under contract next year are now elsewhere.
Devin Williams was the only veteran that was still under contract for next year.
So if there's any reason to worry about him, then you have to address that in the off season too as well as the whole rest of the bullpen.
So we'll see.
That's getting a little ahead of things, but for right now, we're gonna see what this Mets bullpen has to offer, what a lot of young guys, old guys trying to prove themselves have to show.
It'll be interesting because we don't know how long Devin Williams is out, but a right shoulder strain, generally no joke, and the Mets closer is gonna be dealing with that for the foreseeable future
