Will Crosby’s trade value be the same?
Mike Florio and Chris Simms discuss Maxx Crosby's trade value after the Raiders' deal with the Ravens fell apart, questioning if Las Vegas can still get two first-round picks for the star pass rusher.
Video Transcript
So I think the other thing, too, just I ask you, just as a football friend, two guys talking the sport, you think there's any way the Raiders get two first-round picks for Maxx Crosby now, now that this happened?
Like, if he does get traded, do you think the value will ever be the same?
And now we, we have one doctor who's lowering and gonna get That's in everybody's head.
Can they ever achieve or retrieve that type of value for him again?
I, I It feels like no.
What do you think?
Yes, but- Okay here's when it would have to happen.
He's fully healed.
He goes in and does a physical.
Everything's fine now, and it would be at some point after this draft.
It would be a 27 and 28 first-round pick, like the Packers ultimately did with Michael Parsons.
It would have to be a trade later in the year.
The problem is, in order to get the cap benefit of the restructuring clause in his contract, the Ravens are gonna have to give him most of his money now.
They're not gonna avoid the 30 million.
Yeah, yeah.
They're gonna have to, if they wanna do that cap device, the Raiders, excuse me, they're gonna have to activate it now, and, and, they will have paid Although that makes him more attractive.
This even bolsters the argument of getting two first-round picks for the Raiders.
Yeah, it does.
Let's say they, they move his salary all the way down to the minimum of 1.3 for a guy of his experience.
You're getting him for 1.3, the Raiders have paid the other 28.7, and the knee is healthy enough to pass a physical.
Yeah, you can get two ones.
You can get two ones plus.
Although, again, he's gonna want a new contract on the way through the door at that point, especially if you're getting him for only 1.3 for the first year.
But that's the only way it happens.
He's gotta be healthy.
He's gotta be able to pass a physical.
And that's the ridiculous thing about this, and I've seen different opinions, because obviously he's not gonna pass a physical that allows him to play today.
He just had surgery- Yeah on his meniscus two months ago.
It's a three-month injury minimum after you have meniscus repair.
You get a trim, you can get back fairly quickly.
You get a repair That's what JJ McCarthy had rookie year with Minnesota.
That's what wiped out his rookie season.
Oh, you know, anytime you hear torn meniscus, it's like, okay, this is gonna go one way or the other.
This is gonna go arthroscopic surgery, and player's gonna be back fairly quickly, or it's gonna go full repair, and we're not gonna see him for a while.
Adrian Peterson had that, 2016, I believe, in Minnesota.
Yeah.
Happened early against the Colts, week two, Sunday night game.
Torn meniscus, oh, he'll be fine.
Oh, he's getting a full repair.
Oh, well, we'll see ya.
It wasn't against the Colts.
I think he returned against the Colts.
But regardless, it happened early in the year, and he was gone for three months.
So yeah, of course, he's not gonna pass a physical now.
But if he passes a physical later, that's when the Raiders could potentially get the two first-round picks.
By then, though, you know, they may They Look, they didn't wanna trade him.
I know that you could make the argument they really did want to, and, you know, it's good that he's the one who went public and, and wanted out.
But I, I Hey, if I'm Maxx Crosby, and I've gone through this experience where my knee got poked and prodded and, and yeah, I- I'm hearing all these doubts about my condition, and I got a team that has no qualms about letting me rehab and, and play when I'm healthy, and maybe was trying to protect me from myself by getting me to not play when I had a torn meniscus, and I'm making all the other tissues and ligaments and things in my knee worse, to the point where it complicates this physical, yeah, may- maybe, you know, maybe I appreciate it.
Maybe, you know, it's, the old grass is greener.
Got a chance to put a foot on the, the grass on the other side of the fence and got thrown back over the fence.
Maybe I'm happy to get back thrown, thrown back over the fence.
Well, yeah, that's the, the good thing.
I think you just, you go, "Okay."
It shouldn't be bad blood.
There shouldn't be that.
It isn't that.
It was totally understandable with both sides there.
we know the Raiders love Maxx Crosby and all that.
I don't think they wanted, yes, like you said, to give him away.
I think they just realized, yeah, age, where the, he's at.
"Okay, a little wear and tear where we're at as a football team.
We're looking to the future, where you're not sure you really wanna be here.
We get it.
Let's move on.
Let's do something here."
But, but I don't think it was bad blood.
I think that's the thing we, we certainly know, and, you know, he'll be, he'll be welcomed back with open arms here.
but yeah, it's gonna be a little odd and awkward.
And, and, and is there something, yes, that they talk about and go, "Hey, we're still gonna look for a trade."
Does it happen after the draft, and the Raiders go, "Oh, wait," you know, "okay.
Hey, look, Maxx Crosby's totally ready.
Ooh, this team drafted this defense, and we like that guy.
Hey, team, do you wanna talk?
We'll give you Maxx Crosby if you give him that"?
I There's a lot of possibilities where this can go.
So we'll see.
We'll see where it goes, but it's just crazy we're talking about one of the best players in the NFL in this situation right here.
Hey, hey, Chris, you know where it becomes really awkward?
All those Raiders fans that were popping bottles and throwing confetti that they got two first-round picks for Maxx Crosby.
They, they, they gotta find If Maxx is back now, and you don't get the two first-round picks, they gotta find a way to come to terms with it.
And the, the We were talking about this the other day.
The human mind can adjust to change circumstances.
You're gonna have those same Raiders fans that were thrilled to be done with Maxx Crosby and get two first-round picks now saying, "Look at all these guys we signed, and we got Maxx back."
"We're, we're, we're gonna be a playoff contender 'cause we got Maxx and all these other guys."
So regardless, this is where we are, and, Maxx is back in the fold, and we'll see what happens.
