What is up, Cubs fans?
And welcome back to Cubs Roundtable.
I'm Joey Polizzi talking about all things Cubs, and it looks like the Cubs will be in the running for Tigers left-handed pitcher Tarik Skubal after the Cubs three to two extra innings loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.
Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reported that the Cubs are considering Tarik Skubal as a blockbuster trade option at this year's trade deadline.
Obviously, Skubal is that prized possession at this year's trade deadline.
He's gonna be the most coveted starter and overall player at this year's trade deadline, and all signs are pointing to the Tigers getting rid of him by the August 3rd deadline.
Jeff Passan even went on SportsCenter late on Wednesday night and said that the Tigers will definitely be moving Tarik Skubal.
So obviously, Tigers moving Skubal, and the Cubs appear to be a team that will consider him at this year's trade deadline.
But it, it, it, it's kinda tough imagining the Cubs going after Skubal and actually getting him, because number one, they're gonna have to have to really get a good offer to the Tigers because teams like the Dodgers, Brewers, and Rays are all expected to be in the running for Skubal.
And obviously, they have the prospects to give the Cubs.
Dodgers have nine top 100 prospects, Brewers have six, and those two team alone are probably the favorite for Skubal right now.
Cubs don't really have the prospects down in the minors to give to someone like Skubal, and they just don't have that.
So that's, that could be a big time reason why they do not get Skubal.
The second is that in that article by Mooney that he reported about the Cubs interested in Skubal, he said the Cubs still prefer a controllable starting pitcher at this year's trade deadline.
That, that's not Tarik Skubal.
Skubal only has one year remaining on his deal, really only two months after he becomes a free agent after the 2026 season.
So obviously, Cubs are considering Skubal.
Still may be a long shot to get them.
They're obviously not the favorite to land Skubal, but it's at least a good sign that the Cubs are at least interested in Skubal.
Could a deal happen?
Sure, but we'll have to wait a few more days to find out.
But let me know what you guys think about potentially the Cubs grabbing Skubal.
Do you like it?
Do you hate it?
Let me know down below.
And as always, guys, go Cubs go.
