Detroit Lions Offseason Outlook: Keep or Trade David Montgomery?
David Montgomery helped power the Lions' resurgence with toughness, touchdowns and leadership — but if a second-round pick is on the table, should Detroit cash in? The veteran back's future could quietly shape the team's next championship push.

My Lions Nation, we got a little article about none other than David Montgomery, because there is been some chatter, not so much recently, but towards the end of the season, there was a lot of chatter about David Montgomery and if Brad Holmes wanted to keep him around, if, you know, he was affecting the Gibbs breakout and that whole situation, or if he was just, you know, your typical good complementary back.
And to me, it's tough because I do love Monty, but if someone were to offer-- a team were to offer a second-round pick, he's gone.
You can-- you could take Monty for a second-round pick.
He's got, I believe, one year left on his deal, so if he's not cut or traded, he will be a Detroit Lion.
This season, Montgomery came into Detroit, was a phenomenal free agency signing.
He had a thousand yards and thirteen touchdowns in his first season.
He also helped lead the Lions to two NFC North titles, two playoff wins.
He was just that one-two bowling ball punch, and I still think he's got some juice left in the tank.
A lot of people, you know, were disappointed on-- by him on this season.
He really only had a couple big games.
He had a big breakout game against the Ravens, had over a hundred and fifty rush yards.
he had another great game against the Cincinnati Bengals in his hometown, where he threw for a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown.
That was pretty cool to see, put it on for his family, and the Lions allowed him to do that.
But overall, Montgomery, I would like to keep him moving forward.
I don't think the money we would save if we decide to cut him would justify cutting him.
I think that he does bring, you know, a different style of running to our run game than Jahmyr Gibbs does.
If you watch Jahmyr Gibbs, he will oftentimes run up the middle and bounce off the back of an offensive lineman for a one-yard loss or no gain.
Granted, he can hit that hole for a fifty-yard touchdown, but what Montgomery is so good at is falling forward.
Montgomery will run through not just, the back of Taylor Decker, Penny Sewell, or Tate Ratledge, but he will also run through that defensive tackle, along with the Lions' offensive lineman, gaining that one, two, three yards that we need for the first down.
So Montgomery, I think, definitely still has a place on this Detroit Lions roster.
It'll just be interesting to see moving forward how we use him with the breakout of Jahmyr Gibbs, you know, slowly happening, and especially if Jahmyr Gibbs gets a big contract this off-season, which I believe he will.
