Does Simpson have the ability of an elite NFL QB?
Chris Simms breaks down Ty Simpson's performance during the NFL preseason, explaining why the No. 13 overall pick has made the basic throws but hasn't showed off anything spectacular.

The second quarterback taken in this draft got a lot of play time last night, Ty Simpson.
He's gotten a lot of play time in general- Yes, he has this preseason.
Chris, the narrative for the first two games that we got to see of him- Yeah or at least we kind of the narrative buster- Yeah was the stats look really good.
Yep.
The offense is as simple as you'll ever see.
Yep.
They're spamming rollouts- Right and all kinds of bootlegs and everything.
Yep.
Was there anything different in game three?
'Cause once again, the stats were good again.
Yeah.
No, you know what- And the highlight touchdown throw.
The high- the, the, the, the touchdown throw I think was the best play he's had as a preseason.
Those are the kind of things I wanna see, to go wow.
Right.
You know.
You know, one, like, you know, the way they've played, I go that's, you know, the way they've played and what they've asked him to do, I go, that's not really gonna be regular season football.
You know, the little five-yard stick route after week one is not gonna be open in the NFL when their starters are in there and they're doing crazy game planning and different things.
So that's where I go, you know, there hasn't been as many realistic what I would call regular season NFL-type throws as compared to Mendoza.
Yeah, they've served it up on a silver platter.
It, it, first off, I mean, they start the game, Dan Fouts goes, "Hey, Ty Simpson, he's been playing really good," but, you know, he hasn't really made a throw in two preseason games.
Everything's kind of a short to intermediate throw.
There's nothing there.
And, and I was like, yeah, that's what every awesome quarterback is watching and saying, going, "Okay, we'd like to see the I know he can throw the five yard out to the tight end.
I mean, if we can't do that, then shit, we shouldn't have drafted him.
I mean, come on.
That's for sure.
I know he can throw to the back on the bootleg.
Whoopty freaking doo."
Yes.
I wanna see is he going to be special elite NFL starting quarterback.
I did think he let the ball go a little bit more last night.
Okay.
Like threw some heat where I went, okay.
Okay, Ty Simpson.
That was a laser.
All right, I like the way that looked.
You saw some athletic ability.
And then of course the touchdown throw, which I think we got some screenshots and some pictures here to talk about, that I thought was, yes, the most high-level play he had yet, of his young career here.
But you're gonna see here, he's, here he is shotgun, gonna Go ahead, you can go to the next picture, Pete.
He gets to it.
He doesn't like what he sees.
He's got blitz.
He's got people he feels coming off the right side, and he goes, "Uh-oh, I can't stand in here."
So he, he reverses out, runs to his left, let's go to that next picture, buys time.
And I mean, this throw right here, I mean, first off, the coverage is pretty good.
And to be on the run to your left, not only one, to have the guts to throw it here, but then to have the absolute talent to throw it hard enough and accurate enough to, to get it in there, I mean, you see that right there.
That's dangerous.
There's a lot of coaches in football that'd be like, "I don't want you throwing that ball right there.
I don't want that."
He put it right on the money, and again, he shows his, his, his really awesome athletic ability, which you see.
So that's what you liked about Ty Simpson there and everything there.
So he has shown that he is capable of being the backup.
He has shown that.
And I don't know if they will make him the backup.
I think, you know, I would.
I'd, I don't think it's necessarily a great look to go, hey, the number 13th pick in the draft couldn't beat out Stetson Bennett to be the backup.
I wonder if that's gonna play a part in this too, Connor, you know.
Does it mean anything that Stetson Bennett didn't play?
I, I, it does seem- Okay it is a little weird.
But I, I know, I, I, I don't know what to take of that.
I didn't know whether to take that and go, wait, they wanna let Ty Simpson really succeed and take over, and so they could say, "Hey, you're the number two."
Sure.
Or are they just going, "No, Stetson Bennett's our number two.
Let's not get him hurt, and let's let Ty Simpson just continue to grow, and maybe he'll be the two at some point during the year."
I mean, he's, he's definitely more physically gifted than Stetson Bennett.
We know that.
But I would still say I'm not wowed by it.
And here's another thing, right?
I had somebody reach out to me in the NFL when they were talking about, or they, they heard me say some of my stuff about Ty Simpson.
And they kind of, you know, agreed with some of the things I've said.
Like, "Hey, he looks good.
He can play the position," but I'm not like, "Oh, damn, we got a talent at the 13th pick of the draft here."
Right.
Right?
And I think that's what you wanna see with that pick.
And the point that person made to me a little bit was like, "You know, have you heard any buzz?"
And I went, "Well, what do you mean?"
And they go, "Well, I mean, you know, when Josh Allen got drafted, when Mahomes got drafted, when Matthew Stafford was drafted, teams that were scrimmaging them, their own team were like, 'Holy shit, this quarterback is freaking amazing.'
He's throwing, he's making plays."
And you heard LeSean McCoy of Josh Allen go, "He's gonna be a superstar."
Yeah.
"I've never seen anybody with his skill set ever," right?
We heard Travis Kelce about Mahomes in his first training camp going, "Oh my God, you, you wait till you see what he can do," right?
So Matthew Stafford, I can remember up in Detroit, people were like, "I, we can't believe how explosive his arm is."
That to me is another thing that I just go, I haven't heard anybody that.
They've scrimmaged a few teams.
You know, they've been practicing every day.
You don't hear anybody on their team go, "Man, this Ty Simpson," right?
And I think you would hear that if he was blowing people out of the water that way.
So I'm just giving some food for thought.
I know there's people out there that think I'm a hater on Ty Simpson right now.
No, I really like it.
I do.
But I don't know if it matches up to me as being a top 15 pick, you know, elite, future of the franchise kind of guy.
Like physically.
Exactly.
Yeah.
That's what I still question, I guess.
I mean, and it matches- Yeah with what you said before the draft too.
So it's not like you're kind of going with the tides here.
It's just until we see different, this is kind of where we stand right now.
Yeah.
Doesn't mean he can't be an effective quarterback under Sean McVay.
No, exactly right.
But, but, but- It's just that Sean McVay had an effective quarterback in Jared Goff once upon a time- And that's what I mean and needed more.
Effective quarterback i- can only get you so far unless the team's amazing and the system's amazing and all that.
Our top quarterbacks in the game are not effective quarterbacks.
They are game changers.
They are guys that are like, "Oh, we're not good today?
Hey, I got it.
Here comes Superman.
I'm gonna take it over now.
Boom, boom, boom, boom.
Scramble, zoom, sidearm."
And those are those kind of guys.
And that's what I'm not sure if I can totally see that yet there
