Exploring the Media Overreactions After College Football Week 0
Week 0 in college football sparked fast overreactions about teams like Virginia, NC State, and TCU. Joe Raineri and Craig Mish react to this Saturday's slate.

Well, yeah, I, f- listen, I think the overreaction from week zero, Craig, is always priceless this time of year.
You know?
It- let's not forget, eh, what did we see?
We saw eight games, 16 teams play in week zero, right?
And already the headlines across social media and everywhere is Virginia's never losing a game.
North Carolina State should just sh- forget football, just close it up, be a basketball school.
TCU, apparently Sonny Dykes has no idea what he's doing.
Belichick is back.
Close the pro- Er, Belichick is back.
Like, the list of overreactions is unbelievable, and somewhere in there, you know, a lot of those teams play in week one.
And history tells us- Mm-hmm that you would think, hey, you got a, you know, you got one game under your belt, right?
Shouldn't that help favor a team playing against a, a team who's playing their first game of the season?
Yeah, no, it doesn't, and I think Stanford is the perfect example of that.
Now on a short week, ran out of gas, almost got upended as a, as a favorite at home against Hawaii.
Mm-hmm.
And now you've got Miami, who's had two months to prepare for you, just watched you play a game against a inferior team across the board, and you barely won it.
So I, I think there are gonna be some opportunities in week one, Craig, where we can say, "Yeah, the overreaction and the recency bias is alive and well."
And that, to me, is where a lot of these edgers are gonna come up this week.
The, the only thing that I would say that counters that, nothing that you mentioned, by the way, I agree with all of that.
The, the one counter, sort of, that I would have, for that is, North Dakota State, man.
Like, that was a nice story- I think, to have a team in their first ever, FBS game and blow out a team in their first win.
Yep.
Like, to me, I'm just being honest, like, that to me was, like, sort of signature and great to see that happen because it means and it gives some hope to some of these other teams, Joe, that are not in the FBS, that are in FCS, that are thinking, "Should we make the jump?
Should we not make the jump?"
So that's, like, one of those teams for me that I'll keep an eye on this season, 'cause they've dominated, you know, FCS for about 10 years.
So having, them win, I thought, and win big, that was one of the things that I kept my eye on.
But you're right, this is a massive overreaction.
Almost feels like opening day in baseball, that's true.
So true, but it's only more condensed 'cause we don't have games every day, so- Right people are already crowning champions after, week zero.
But I would maybe pump the brakes here a little bit.
