Jim, how do you think a potential extension would look here for Peralta and the Mets?
Well, I, I think what you have to do is look at the free agent market, and there was a definite downturn in terms of length of, of years, a lot of reasons, st- for starting pitchers.
Not Putting Cease aside, you know, Valdez was three years.
We saw Ranger Surez was five years.
But in that range, between three and five years, for even the best starting pitchers, a lot of that has to do with maybe the, a lockout.
I think there's overall risk for starting pitchers, and we know what David Stearns' appetite is and the Mets' appetite for not having a long-term extension.
So I think with a guy like Peralta, you know, if there is a four-year deal somewhere in that range of around 30 million bucks or so, maybe with a club option or a mutual option, I think that's where it would go.
I don't think it'll take long.
His agents are very reasonable.
They're New York-based.
So I think that's all positive.
The one last thing is you don't wanna sign this before the season starts because of, there'll be an impact on the salary cap- Oh and the luxury tax, which is 110%, and, you know, if, if he's making 8 million, if he goes to 30 million before the, before the season starts, he's gonna get taxed, what, it'd be about 48 million bucks is what Steve Cohen, King Cohen, gets taxed on there, Sal.
Yeah.
And you don't Listen, if, as the GM, you wanna make sure that you're being a little more efficient with the money.
So I think if they do a deal, it'd be like Lindores when the season got started.
