Jenny, first of all, how's Matt Chapman doing today?
abdominal strain, so we'll see tomorrow.
Have to get it looked at a little bit more professionally.
Something that had been building up over time, went away, came back, and then on the slow roller, just a sharp pain there.
Wanted to try and continue, obviously couldn't.
Given, the situation with Willie also dealing with stuff, was it maybe more likely you guys might have to make some sort of move tomorrow?
Yeah, more than likely, one way or another, Coste is involved.
Six walks from Rupe.
It's kind of been a struggle for the last, you know, month or so for him, or maybe more, long- longer than that.
I mean- Yeah, I mean, the last outing was really good.
The two prior, I wouldn't even call them similar to this, to be honest with you.
just a lack of inducing contact, pitch count climbing on him, and then I think tonight was a little bit of a different animal.
What do you see tonight?
I mean, six walks is y- you know, f- from my perspective, how much of an impact it made, I don't know.
But, gets a, a borderline call, missed call against Perdomo, however you want to phrase it, and kind of put him into a little bit of a tizzy, at least body language-wise and on the next pitch.
Again, how much of an impact it had, I don't know.
But, you know, that's something that I think is important for him, is when he's focused and dialed in, he's pretty good.
But one of the reasons he's good is he's ultra-competitive, and when that spills over into, you know, being, being distracted from the next pitch or whatever the more intelligent way to say it, it, it, it makes an impact.
But from there, missing kind of on both sides and obviously was, was not who he is tonight.
On the flip side, what are your thoughts on what Hauser was able to do coming in in that situation?
He was outstanding.
And, you know, we've kind of put him in a position that he's not all too familiar with, not that comfortable, definitely not his first choice.
And, given he was on three days' rest, tried to guard him a little bit.
Pitch count wasn't that high because he was so good, and he was determined as all hell to go out for that last inning.
And threw a good inning.
I mean, a perfect bunt.
That guy ends up scoring.
But overall, he was outstanding for us.
It's two times in a row he's looked really good and has been relentless in the strike zone.
Cox said he'd been working with Washington so much, and his legs ached.
What did you think of that?
I mean, he hadn't played there since college.
Yeah.
you know, when I talk to those guys, and they hit the nail on the head.
When he's got a chance to make a really athletic play, they said he was outstanding.
and you get with a guy like Wash, as he's shown with other guys, he gets you really good at dominating the average play.
But he got the pop-up, I guess, as an average play.
But, that was a play that not every second baseman in the league probably makes.
You're s- guessing that you're probably not too happy with many aspects of that game?
No, I mean, it, it, it takes on a different vibe when the first two innings go down the way that it did.
Barroso's a fully capable hitter, but you get him out in that inning, up for debate if we move on to Hauser there.
Again, you can't go back in time and say everything would've went exactly how the rest of the game went if we get that guy out.
but, you know, the way those first three innings went down, it, it kind of sets a tone.
We talked about it before the game.
Kind of sets a tone, and, you got guys trying, but nothing was good enough tonight.
Do you feel that there's a snowball effect on everything that's going on in the season now as you get deeper and deeper into it?
No, I think every game's separate.
I, I think if anyone's got an issue with that in there, it's me.
you know, you think about last game.
I don't think you ever think about next game, or at least I don't.
But, I think guys come, come to the park every day trying to win the game that's in front of them, and there's a snowball effect with what happens within the game, for sure.
The only thing you can do is be more determined if, you know, too many free passes, an error, some sort of mistake, alls you can do is be more determined.
Arraez obviously, a pretty substantial homer there and shot for a, a cycle.
Your thoughts on his night?
Yeah, I mean, he was phenomenal.
speak of determination, he's always got it.
So, and a- and again, I don't think there's anybody out there that you could accuse of lack of overall focus or effort, but if we could match his energy and his determination as a group, we'd be in a pretty good spot.
Has he been your best overall player?
he's been pretty dang good.
Off-the-cuff answer, you know.
And baseball's an everyday sport, so it kind of depends on the day, but I think you know what you're getting every day out of that guy.
I don't want to see an injury, but, I mean, given the infield situation, was there any amplification to just the reaction of, you know, Chapman going out and, I mean- No, not really.
I mean, we assured him we got a couple different moves we can make, so don't try and fight through this thing just because of the situation we have where we're a little bit short-handed.
Knowing him, he probably did anyway.
just tried to get him to make sure on deck with some swings.
He definitely felt good.
And, he took a couple hacks, if I'm not mistaken, at least one, and didn't look out of sorts.
And when he finished the at bat, could feel it again.
So no, just want to see the guy be healthy.
I mean, he's got a, He's expecting, too, so, that's coming around the corner.
You'd like to see the guy take advantage of his reps before, you know, he's at home for a day or two or three.
I don't know if I Paul, Arraez been playing much third base?
No, he has before in the big leagues.
Yeah.
went to him right away, after that play with Chappy, and he's down to do whatever.
I mean, his dad must be a pretty good coach because I think he's the number one influence in his life.
But whatever he did, he's, he's made him in- incredibly coachable.
So he's, you could put him in a position where he hasn't been before, and he would do it for the team.
It sounds like Wash has had a pretty big impact on him, too.
I think those two hooked up in spring training, and were, were both were on the war path to do, what we're in the process of seeing.
